Well, it almost seems as if having Harriet Meiers withdrawn has actually hurt the left in regards to the effect it has had on Bush's need to 'energize the base.' I am very nervous about this one - we must do more than hope and wait, it is letter-writing, calling and visiting time.

Oh yes, and anyone interested in calling, writing, and/or visiting your congressionally elected officials can get contact information for them here.

Please be clear and point out that the only elected officials who matter here are Senators. The House of Representatives is not part of the process. Contacting them will do nothing.

Once Rove jiggered this last election, the Supremes were toast. We always knew that. It's surprising how bad it feels, though, now that we're being handed this clinker.

I must admit to feeling rather hopeless about preventing the worst. The Democrats in the Senate have been wambling invertebrates for the most part. (Although Harry Reid's (D-Nevada, Minority leader) recent flame of the Administration's trumped up evidence for war is a nice change of pace. So maybe I'm being too pessimistic.)

He's a big fan of natural justice and common sense, clearly.

Supreme Court justice nominee Samuel Alito while serving as deputy assistant attorney general during the Reagan administration helped write a Department of Justice opinion that employers could legally fire people living with AIDS because of a "fear of contagion, whether reasonable or not," the Washington Post reports. The opinion said the firing would be legal because discrimination based on "insufficient medical knowledge" was not banned by federal laws…

John Kerry mentions in an email to Democrats after Alito's confirmation:

>> This morning, 42 Senators voted against Alito's nomination. That's the highest number of votes against any Supreme Court nominee since Clarence Thomas in 1991.

an interesting fact.

"As our legislators vote, we must carefully note their positions on this issue. Their oath of office is not to the President or even to "protect the people," but to the Constitution. And it is the Constitution - and the future of our democratic republic - that is at stake here."

"our" refers to Americans, of which I ain't one (if it matters).
