Fascinating AIDA

ONLY NICE THINGS

So, I'm having some hardware trouble with a new drive, and the tech support bunnies have asked me to send them an AIDA report to see what other software and drivers I have installed. However, this got my tinfoil hat buzzing, and I found myself wondering what exactly could be communicated by such a thing. So, what does an AIDA report tell us about somebody's computer? Any ideas? It feels oddly intimate...

Ok, first off, AIDA (more properly, AIDA 32) no longer exists. The program is now called Everest, and is available in its latest glory from this page.

As to your concerns over a report, they're largely unfounded. I've been using this program since it came out (having previously used AIDA 32), and can assure you that whilst it is easily the most comprehensive system information tool I've seen, there is nothing about it that constitutes spyware or malware, as far as I can see. It doesn't appear to scan anything it shouldn't, and my various firewalls don't detect it trying to send any information off into cyberspace.

The only thing you might possibly be concerned about is that it will, for the purposes of a report, detect and record your IP address, but since you can choose to output the reports as plain text, CTRL+Fing for 'ip address', then removing the various sections, is no problem.

In short, output your report as plain text and remove anything you really don't want showing, but, by and large, Everest (AIDA 32, whatever) is both safe and secure.
If you really are concerned, just ensure that when you make with the clicky on the 'Report' button, you select the 'Hardware-related pages' option.

Well, you should be able to read the output before you send it to them. I'm not actually familiar with the program, but I had a quick look and it outputs as HTML (among other formats) - so you should be able to run it, look at the output, see if there's anything you don't want it telling people and see from there...
