I've been interested for ages in MMORPGS and while Urban Dead has its charms, I've been itching to try one of the big ones. I dipped my toe in, at E Randy's suggestion, with the free-for-now Anarchy Online, and I decided I wanted to give something a serious go.
I've opted for Guild Wars because, like many others, I like the fact that there is no monthly fee. In the long run, it isn't clear whether this will actually save money since they will doubtless be releasing a string of expensive expansions. It remains to be seen whether the original will remain worth playing.
As a complete novice to MMORPGs, I'm struck at how I've missed on the evolution of CRPGs. Down this forum I rave about Baldurs Gate 2 and the immersive experience that was and I have always wondered, given the success of that game, why there haven't been more games like that. In part, I think, its because the CRPG has moved on to this. Guild Wars certainly has a very involved and lengthy game to it which is like a single player game, except you play it with others to an extent. And the added bonus is that Guild Wars also features PvP tournaments which I've dipped my toe in and provide some instant gratification, and add to the longevity of the game.
One of the most striking things for me about it is how seriously people take the game. That is, when I read the infamous article comparing the economy of Everquest to that of Bulgaria, I laughed. Now, I realise, that people are extremely protective of their hard earned "money" and beggars are very poorly thought of in some quarters. I've even seen people lecture others about the benefits of working hard and about how doling out charity to others will only make them lazy in the long run. When you hear someone telling you about how much they sweated and suffered to accumulate their gold coins, you can easily forget that this is a game to be played. And I'd always assumed it was for fun.
So is anyone else playing this game? I'd be interested in a Barbelith Guild if there were enough of us. |
