As requested from the Quantum butterfly thread. Jesse, I perform breath of fire slightly differently but having tried the method you describe it felt the same so if anyone wants to insert Jesse's method feel free. Enjoy:

--------------------

The first part of the meditation is breath of fire:

Sit comfortably with your back straight. Breath in and out through the nose only. Using your abdomen to control your breath inhale in quick, short contractions. This is achieved by pulling the navel backwards toward your spine using your abdominal muscles, as in diaphragmatic breathing, to exhale and once the air is expelled inhale by simply relaxing your abdominal muscles, your lungs will fill on their own. Do this as quickly as you can and let your body relax. This does tend to clear out your nostrils, so keep a tissue handy. Do this for about a minute initially, until you can sustain it comfortably for longer.

Perform each of the following steps in turn, for the time shown:

1> Five minutes: Sit comfortably, inhale through puckered lips to make a whistling sound, and exhale through your nose. As you inhale imagine the whistling sound reverberating at your third eye.

2> Two minutes: Change your breathing so that you inhale through the nose and exhale, whistling, through the puckered lips. On inhaling, think of the sound "SAT" and on exhaling, think of the sound "NAM."

3> Three minutes: Lie on your stomach, put your palms on the floor next to your chest and push up, arching your back. (This is not a push-up. Do not pivot at your feet. Leave your thighs on the floor, arching your back.) Stare at a point on the ceiling above you. Breathe as you did in part 2.

4> Three minutes: Relax, exhaling, and roll onto your back. Close your eyes. Pull your knees onto your chest and clasp your arms around them. Pull your head up between your knees, and vibrate the sound "NNNNNNNNN."

5> Five minutes: Rest by lying on your back and crossing your legs on the floor. The legs should be crossed as if sitting up (Indian style for you Americans).

6> Two minutes: Sit up, crossed-legged. Put your hands on your shoulders, thumbs behind and fingers in front. Swivel your torso, leading with your elbows, left and right pivoting at the spine. Inhale as you go to the left, and exhale as you go to the right. For the second minute, change your position so you are sitting on your heels, with your knees in front of you. At the end, take one last deep inhalation, hold it in, and exhale, proceeding to step 7

7> Five minutes: Lean forward over your knees until your head touches the floor. Allow your hands to slide back toward your feet, palms up. Relax as far as you can.

It is in the final relaxation that you feel the full effects of these meditations.

Lie on your back. Imagine energy flowing up from the base of your spine all the way past the window of your third eye and out through the top of your head. With the eyes closed, imagine the slow mantra "SAH TAH NAH MAH" four times as you inhale slowly through the nose and hold the breath in long enough top complete the mantra. Exhale more quickly and with a little sound of air against your lips, as you imagine the faster mantra "WUH GROO." Your mind may wander from the mantra and breathing technique, so if you realize this is happening, bring yourself back to the practice. Continue for as long as you wish. Before opening your eyes stretch your legs and whistle a few notes to ground yourself

Robert Anton WIlson's book, Prometheus Rising, details the breath of fire as well, which is where I discovered it. RAW suggests that the breath of fire inspires circuit level one feelings, fetal feelings of the womb. I think it has a lot to do with the feelings alchool produces as well.

Breath of Fire is pretty standard for Kundalini Yoga and tough as hell too.

My partner does Kundalini yoga regularly (including a routine almost identical to Gho5tD4nc3r's one) and I occasionally join in. I'm a dilletant when it comes to yoga though.

Anyway, Breath of Fire is a fucking hard Cardio workout. Most of the routines are meant to be done for up to 30 minutes or more with intense breath of fire sessions within those routines. After the first 3-4 minutes I usually finding myself unable to hold the breath of fire and I need to do deep breathing to catch my breath before I can begin again.

It's tough.
