i've been listening to the current single since a friend sent me link, and i arrived at another mate's house today to be told they are number one.

is anyone else loving this song as much as i am?

i didnt realise when i discovered it that i was part of their building fanbase that has seen the sugababes off the top spot after only three weeks.

these kids are pretty young, and judging by the other material i have found, there could be some good things ahead.

they have a website at arcticmonkeys.com (no downloads on it as of yet)

i love their energy, i love their simplicity, and i love the way the singer delivers his lines. they remind me of a few folks, but they do so in a way that i find exciting and not too obvious.

get on the bandwagon before they become the libertines!

they're already like the libertines for me - over-rated and comprehensively derivative.

they do remind me of a few bands, but then so do so many.
it feel good to hear a band that, although they remind me of others, do so in a way that makes my brain smile.

how many of their songs have you heard?

I have to say that the name puts me off. It's basically student-style "random", and I find it hard to take them seriously. Although, is a name important?

Regardless of whether or not I like the music, I have respect for them for doing well at a young age, as with the Sugababes.

i've some tracks other than the current single that i am fairly certain are from the same band, and they arent too bad.
i think the guy could be a good songwriter once he grows past his idols.

hell, he's already written good songs.

i guess i mean it feels like he could write consistently good songs. with the average age of the band being a low nineteen there's plenty of room for growth, i reckon.

kids that bring energy are always exciting.
if they can harness that energy before it fucks off and they become the libertines, so much the better.

They seem ok, probably need to hear more, I don't like that single much, but do like "Bigger Boys and Stolen Sweethearts" found here.

For what my opinion's worth (I'm too old at 30 to be all about the future of rock and roll), I find them a bit over-rated.

To me, they're okay, but just okay. The vernacular style in a northern accent sounds very derivative of the Kaiser Chiefs. The Arctic Monkeys are from Sheffield, the Kaiser Chiefs from Leeds, so very much the same neck of the woods.

Of course they are young and could do much more, but I have this nagging suspicion they've been signed and hyped up because of the resemblance in style. Who knows if they'll get the chance to mature.

For those of an age to remember Britpop, the whole hype around them reminds me very much of Menswear. Anyone remember them? Everyone knew the photogenic youngsters were going to be the next big thing and they were on the front of every magazine. But no one could bring one of their songs to mind and they sank without a trace.

I could be wrong about the parallels - and Menswear didn't have downloads to build up a fanbase, so perhaps it's an unfair comparison.

So... Both bands from "the same neck of the woods", but one band is derivative of the other because they sing in the same accent? Have you thought this through?

I see your point that does sound a bit confused.

What I mean is that their musical and songwriting styles sound similar (ie. that quite vernacular, conversational but dry tone) and that the similarity is increased by the similarity in accent. If they were from Glasgow and sounded as they did they would still be a bit derivative, but probably not - and this bit is conjecture - as attractive to record companies as a soundey-likey.

Too many uses of the word similar there...
