Well. Just came from the theatre, or the multiplex, if you prefer. Yep. I paid 8.75 Canadian to watch SAW II.
I liked Saw. It was somewhat entertaining, other than the extreme lapses in logic and a plot lifted from Cube and Seven. I also have a love of Elwes (dig that entrance in Shadow of the Vampire).
But SAW II... Is it good, is it bad? I'm going to be spoiler free in this post, and tell you nothing of the plot, save for the fact that it treads unbelievably familiar ground. If you know anything about horror movies, well, my friends, you've seen this before.
At least the acting is a little better, and they have more of a budget, so the awful "car chase" of the first movie is not repeated. The director, new to the (probably) series, uses most of the same tricks as the first film. He just adds a sense of... professionalism. The same cannot be said for the ludicrous script, penned by the original writer of the first film, who also played the photographer in said movie.
The fun in Saw and Saw II is the guessing game. I absolutely love trying to guess the inevitable twist ending. There's nothing more fun. Thanks to The Sixth Sense, everything's gotta have a twist ending, even if it doesn't make any fucking sense (I'm looking at you, Haute Tension, you bitch). Yet, there is true fun to be found in trying to predict the craziness. This twist ending? Yeah, it was okay, only if you completely disregard any logic whatsoever.
So go see Saw II only if you liked Saw. Otherwise, you'll be grinding your teeth and praying that Eli Roth makes another film. (It's called Hostel and it's going to blow the roof off of Saw and Saw II combined.) |
