so the No-Neck Blues band, after about 30 releases put out totally on their own (and one put out by john fahey) finally signed with Kill Rock Stars / 5RC for their new album. for fans of the band, this action -- which is just totally basic for any other band -- is unprecedented. this site puts it well:
Essentially, the band seems to be dealing with the task of reclaiming self in a world where all saving avenues have been co-opted by agendas. Or, like, totally something along those lines. Whatever they're going for, anticipation for this album is sure to be high: NNCK have been credited as one of the major forbearers of a successful group of experimenters that includes Exceptor (which actually boasts a former member of NNCK, so maybe they don't count) and Animal Collective.
ok, so, in addition to the album, the band did a MUSIC VIDEO for the track "The Black Pope" -- which i had the good fortune to direct. it's official location (since the kill rock stars site is currently all fucked up) is at www.adammortimer.com/theblackpope.htm.
i would love to hear feedback about the video, and to initiate a discussion about the band. is there something in their music and approach which is clearly related to our culture, ie, is it influential? other bands obviously influenced include the Black Dice and Sunburned Hand of the Man. But is there a larger impact made by work like this? has the climate for this kind of music chilled, or is this the right time to finally step out of the shadows? |
