The No-Neck Blues Band: new album and VIDEO

so the No-Neck Blues band, after about 30 releases put out totally on their own (and one put out by john fahey) finally signed with Kill Rock Stars / 5RC for their new album. for fans of the band, this action -- which is just totally basic for any other band -- is unprecedented. this site puts it well:

Essentially, the band seems to be dealing with the task of reclaiming self in a world where all saving avenues have been co-opted by agendas. Or, like, totally something along those lines. Whatever they're going for, anticipation for this album is sure to be high: NNCK have been credited as one of the major forbearers of a successful group of experimenters that includes Exceptor (which actually boasts a former member of NNCK, so maybe they don't count) and Animal Collective.

ok, so, in addition to the album, the band did a MUSIC VIDEO for the track "The Black Pope" -- which i had the good fortune to direct. it's official location (since the kill rock stars site is currently all fucked up) is at www.adammortimer.com/theblackpope.htm.

i would love to hear feedback about the video, and to initiate a discussion about the band. is there something in their music and approach which is clearly related to our culture, ie, is it influential? other bands obviously influenced include the Black Dice and Sunburned Hand of the Man. But is there a larger impact made by work like this? has the climate for this kind of music chilled, or is this the right time to finally step out of the shadows?

I love the No neck Blues Band. Although I've felt their albums have never entirely lived up to their raucaus and assaulting live show, they still offer up some crazy "punk is hippie" madness. I find it interesting they made the jump (or "hop," more accurately?) to 5RC. I don't really see that label, that holds Hella and other spazz core groups in their roster, as gravitating towards the dada inspired raga that NNKBB specializes in. It's cool though that both continue to take chances, and this move will probably lend them a new base of fans. I'm looking forward to seeing them again at the Tongues 'fest at the Empty Bottle in a week or so. . . Anyone heard the offshoots like Lucky Bird and Isitiz (sic?) ?

Well, I never heard of the band but I liked the song they had in your video: I really liked your video, it was suitably creepy and complimented the music quite well... It reminded me of those old surrealist films I first saw in college and enjoy watching every now and then (Maya Deren, for example). And I've always found the eggplant to be one of the most visually interesting of the vegetable family. Good job! But what the hell was that bandmember wearing on his head anyway? Some kind of guitar case? Weird...
