Deathcab For Cutie

Alright, I just heard this song on the radio called "Soul Meets Body" by the band "Deathcab For Cutie".

I freaking loved it.

It's just an amazing song. I haven't heard anything else by them, (I think...), and I just wanted to know if anyone else on the board has heard of them, likes this song...etc.

And do they have more songs like this? Or could they be a one-hit-wonder?

Hit me up with some info, homies.

I adore their The Photo Album...er....album. It has quite a few lovely sing along worthy songs, particularly "Information Travels Faster." The follow-up album, Transatlanticim was on some bombastic, Jeff Lynn kind of more polished rock tip. It's very solid, but not quite as catchy to me. I heard the new album once, and wasn't terribly impressed with it next to the previous work.

Also, Benjamin Gibbard, the singer, collaborates with Dntel as the ever popular The Postal Service (Barbe-thread here), whose album Give Up is a good meshing of DCFC style song writing with light pop electronics. Quite a few spectacular songs on there.

More seth stuff on the postal service album here- I think he pretty much nails how good it is (since i posted in that thread i've found it an album i keep returning to more and more). Its funny for a supposed side project I certainly seem to hear them praised more than Death Cab- and have in fact only ever listened to DCFC after having heard Postal Sevice.

Anyway Its definitely worth checking out especially their sublime 'The district Sleeps Alone Tonight'.

Apologies for (kinda) threadrotting- I did download Soul Meets Body on the recomendation its nice but it didn't push the same buttons as The Postal Service... maybe another grower?

I too will side with Copey and say while DC4C are sweet - I've heard mostly their acousticky stuff - the Postal Service are immaculately good. I'm quietly hoping that they'll move from side project to front project and tour, get their arses down to australia toot sweet (or however you spell it).

But also, to get on topic, yes, DC4C have a decent back catalogue. I haven't heard this latest thing, but some of the older things are v. nice. The album most of the stuff i've got is called The Death Cab For Cutie Forbid, methinks. There's a great little ditty called Photobooth on that album that's ace potatocakes.

On a side note, I only just found out recently that they're named after a Bonzo Dog Doodah Band song - one of my favourite Bonzo songs, which I never knew the name of until recently.

I recommend starting with their earlier concept album, "We have the facts and we're voting yes". Stand out track would be Company Calls Epilogue, possibly their finest track for it's story-within-a-song prowess.

Personal highlights in terms of albums were then The Photo Album, then Transatlanticism (the previous album to Plans - for Title and Registration and the title song), and now Plans, which I love as a sequel.

Only ever heard one track of theirs - This Temporary Life on the McSweeney's CD-thing - and I liked it a lot. Really should look into their stuff.

I have a big soft spot for Death Cab's earlier stuff - circa "We have the Facts and We're Voting Yes" and earlier. They have an really cool, 'floaty', almost psychedelic sound to them which really appeals to me, and some great songs too - the singer's quite restrained and there are some superb lyrics.

"The Photo Album" was a big disappointment to me though; it has them sounding far more like a bog standard "rock" band, quite lumpen and angsty, and a lot of the songs fall completely flat. Very, er, 'emo' is a negative sense, whereas previously they were smart and cool-sounding enough to get away with it. The bits and pieces I've heard from subsequent releases have led to beleive they've generally continued this pattern of development and.. I'm not really into it.

Still love the early stuff though. Apologies for sounding like the ultimate indie bore.

The title track from Transatlanticism is my favorite song by them, but the whole album's great. The new one's pretty solid, but I miss some of the more bombastic stuff from Trans.

I looooved Styrofoam Plates off of Photo Album (I think) but everything else I've heard (which is not a lot, I admit) didn't tickle me the same way. I liked it in a generic kind of "This stuff is oh-kay" way.

I've got to get to hearing some of these.

On another note, (perhaps a different thread?), what do you guys use to download music without getting virus-ed or sued? Or does someone have an FTP?

But back to Deathcab: Were they on The O.C. one time? I quit watching the show regularly after the season premiere pansied out and didn't kill off the idiot brother, but sometime in the club by the ocean, I was sure it was Deathcab For Cutie playing.

Anyone care to clear this up?

Oddman, could you try to avoid randomly putting spoilers for shows not seen in the UK yet into threads where one might reasonably expect not to encounter them? Also, could you keep an eye on whether your terminology is likely to cause offence? K thks bye.

In answer to your question, Seth is a big Death Cab for Cutie fan, which means that Josh Schwartz is a big DCFC fan. My hipper associates take this as proof that Schwartz and thus Cohen are aging indie kids without a handle on the young people's music.

Death Cab - saw them ages ago at the Water Rats, if memory serves, and they were pretty generic then - admittedly, it's pretty hard to make anything sound good at the Water Rats, but have they developed notably?
