Tescos manages to do it without seeming to need a global conspiracy

Good point. Although if you're suggesting they engineered the foot and mouth epidemic I'd consult your legal advisors first.

"May", "possible" and "potential" are exactly what I'm talking about. Pakistan and Iraq are "here" and "now", but at a nice comfortable distance so most of us can ignore them for most of the time. As I said before, WMD were talked up as a potential threat and therefore a justification for action and look where that's got us. And I don't think this is an "appeasement of Hitler" type situation, as there it was inaction in light of what had actually already happened (Austria and the Sudatenland). All I've been trying to say really is that yes it may be a very potential threat but why the near hysteria in some quarters given other more immediate pressing problems? Yes make preparations in case but panic will help no one.

So, we didn't all die then? Phew, that was a relief.

Don't get too relaxed yet.

Nearly three times as many Chinese poultry are infected with H5N1 now than last year, despite China’s insistence that all poultry be vaccinated. In fact, vaccination may be the reason for the increase in infections, researchers say.

...More infected – yet apparently healthy – birds in Chinese markets for more of the year means more risk for humans. All but one of China’s reported human cases of H5N1 happened after the Fujian strain started its rise, and some lived far from any known outbreak in poultry, but close to urban poultry markets.

There could be many more unrecognised cases.

The Fujian strain appears to be either vaccine-resistant or spread by vaccines. And by apparently healthy birds.
