Black 1

Sunn O))) could be one of my favorite newer groups. This new album of theirs, "Black 1", has shorter songs then their usual releases, but its still great stuff. I especially liked the vocals on the second track and a lot of the noise on "Cursed Realms (of the winterdemons)" (shit song title, great song). There's a real sense of dread and darkness on this album, even for Sunn O))). Oh yeah, the artwork is really kick-ass too.

are you familiar with the group Earth from the 90s? Sunn O))) began as a kind of quasi-tribute band to Earth, playing the same kind of sounds and reusing some of the song titles... in fact Sunn 0))) was the title, i believe of a rare Earth album. there was also an Earth tribute album called, I think, Legacy of Dissolution featuring a Sunn 0))) track, as well as Justin Broadrick and other avant-metal/noise types.

Yeah, I know they were inspired by Earth... Have never heard any of Earth's stuff though. Will have to check out one day.

I nearly got this and will do soon, and would just like to add that all the artwork on Sunn0))) albums is interesting and good. On the current one it's a dark forest- but not your average dark forest. I think the artwork is typical of what makes Sunn0))) the only metal band for me at the moment: subletey.

Just ordered this and the new Earth album from Southern Lord. If you haven't already checked out an Earth album, then as a Sunn fan I can heartily recommend Earth 2 which is a materpiece of slowed down slayer riffage and inspirational downer soundscapes. Flipped my brain sideways first time I heard it. Will report back when my cds arrive...

I've got to buy a copy. Apparently, the first 2000 or so come with a bonus live disc, if you buy them from Southern Lord.

The latest Terrorizer has a big Sunn0))) feature.

Sunn0))) totally ARE metal!!!

Greg Anderson: "I always thought that the riffing and other aspects of Sunn0))) are rooted in black metal".

And, Sypha, I picked this next quote for you, to make up for that.

Stephen O'Malley: "Sunn0))) links to Whitehouse around the power of sound ane getting the audience to be a receiver and in that sense a participator- which is stronger than any link to them singing songs about things one shouldn't be doing".

Among the many things that suck about Jhon Balance being dead (apart from the inherent tragedy of it anyway) is that it wasn't exactly inconceivable that their could have been a full-on Coil/Sunn0))) collaboration. In fact, I'd have put money on such a thing happening. And I can't even begin to imagine what it would have sounded like... or how fucking wonderful it would have been.

Has anyone else seen them live, though? They were one of my absolute favourite bands until they showed up at the two What Is Music? gigs in Sydney they were scheduled to play and acted like tits - pushing over amps when there was a tech problem, and generally being truculent little dears. The sets they actually played themselves were OK - their backline was four eight-speaker bass cabs PER GUITARIST plus either four or eight (can't quite remember) Sunn heads, so it was LOUD and very feel-able -but I think the albums did it so much better.

Ace robes, though.

Saw them at ATP last year, with Totem_Polish, and was absolutely blown away. You didn't so much hear as feel the music; the bass reverberated around my rib cage all the way through!

It felt like we'd wandered into some cult scene from a bad Lovecraft movie, and for what it's worth, I adored them.

Aye, I was there too, Mick-Travis. Missed the start of the set. I remember lots of people walking out as I arrived. The fools. They were indeed pretty awesome. Good hoods, red light, slow strumming. Hmm, thinking about it makes me want to see them again. Dunno if it's the change in weather and the dark nights, but somehow Sunn O))) seem like just the thing to be listening to right now. Must. Get. New. Album.

Are they playing any UK dates to promote the new record? Cos' I would SO be up for a dose of be-cowled doom n' gloom..

Just got this and am listening to it now. Very, very good, and a salient reminder of why I need a new stereo. I'd say they're totally showing a love of black metal on this- right down to the Gothic script on the album inlay, which is like a Burzum album's- BUT WITH MORE BLACK.

Another comment I like in the Terrorizer interview: "We're not a guitar band, we're an amplifier band. A tube amplifier band, to be precise." The guitar is just a tool you use for playing an amp, in the same way you use sticks to play drums. I like it.

havnt picked up the new one yet, money isnt tight right now but will be in a couple of weeks. i have a bunch of their other records, has their sound grown at all? is it different? after a while it just kind of sounds the same. its all good, but same. decided to spend my doom money on the new Earth cd, its beautiful and witchy.

excited to see Sunn 0))) are playing in my town mid december. with BORIS & THRONES.

my friend saw them last year in minneapolis, said it was more like a gallery show than a concert. said it wasnt really "loud" in the traditional sense of the word, but said that the air was really "thick". like you could feel it. looking forward to checking this out myself.

Stephan O'Malley has a pretty interesting blog. Usually something cool to check out.

The air's usually pretty thick, also, as they overuse a smoke machine like you wouldn't believe.

Here's some information from the Durtro email list:

David Tibet to record album with Ben Chasny and Stephen O'Malley

David is commencing recording an album in San Francisco with two of his heroes, Six Organs of Admittance's Ben Chasny and Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley. This is not a Current 93 album, but a new project featuring all three individuals.

That sounds like it could be rather interesting.

That could be one of the best things ever. Hopefully it means Tibet's returning to his old prolific ways...
