Something I've been thinking about recently is how so many people (inlcuding my self at first) seem to see a place like Barbelith as somewhere to come and rant: always throwing their opinion out at the highest volume. These aren't neccesarily tolls proper- they just don't understand that you have to be happy to have your views and ideas challenged to take part in Barbelith (I think this last point is pretty much self evident, but do say if you disagree).
Seeing as this is a central point of Barbelith- as opposed to other message boards which seem quite happy to offer a mouthing off service without any element of the participants being challenged, and being required to respond effectively to those challenges- could we not in some way make this clear, in, as it were, "big red letters" on the registration pages, and up at the top of the front page?
Obviiously I'm not being as anal as to actually specify the font or colour, but I just think making this element of the site more widely signposted it might save us some wasted time and atract people who want to join in properly. |
