Playstation 2 - The pestilence.

Guys, hi. Quite new, I am... quite new to the world of computer games, which are, y'know, I think, making my life a bit better.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, what are the classic games for PS2? It is terribly important that I get your answers.

The classics... well, they're Rez, Ico, Metal Gear Solid 2/3, Katamari Damacy, Grand Theft Auto, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, God of War. Etc.

However, there are many excellent games which are by no means classic.

So: what do you like? What sort of things do you want to experience? What do you not want to do? The classics for you might not be everyone else's classic, you see. For instance, E Randy will tell you the joys of Disgaea and Phantom Brave, but they're not to everyone's taste. He's not a big fan of Burnout, but Burnout: Revenge is one of the finest games you'll find on the shelves at the moment, IMHO.

So: what do you want to do? Then we can find your classics. The list at the top is pretty darn excellent, incidentally.

Burnout 2 or 3 are possibly the finest games to play with a bunch of pissed mates, ever. Especially in crash mode.

Im in the same boat here... after selling my PS2 in harder times , I've been keeping myself content with my XBOX and Gamecube. Recently however, I've been flicking folournly through the pages of EDGE, dismayed at the lack of good games for the Cube n Box, but seeing a plethora of innovative, new gaming experiences (usually from Japan) revealed before my tearful eyes.

So I took the plunge and bought a new PS2 with some of the delights I'd been so cruelly denied by my gaming platform choices before. Katamrai Damcy (h'excellent), God of War, Veiwtiful Joe (yeah I know this was on Cube aswell), Silent Hill, Jak n Daxter, Gitaroo Man... mmmm squishy innovative fresh newness drips out of my new console.

Gregory horrorshow, Ratchet and Clank and some others are on there way, but could anyone recommend me some other games I should try based on the above games? Im not into RPGs or sports titles really though...

Threadcromancy! Okay, so a friend gave me a PS2 as a thank-you for a pretty major favor. And I got a bunch of games from my friends, but they're all deep, insightful, profound RPG and turn-based strategy things where you get immersed in a beautiful brilliant otherworld with great graphics and scintillating characters.

Mainly, though, I come home from work and throw on Burnout 3, because I don't WANT a beautiful brilliant otherworld with great graphics and scintillating characters when I get home after eight hours. I want to smash things.

I'm intrigued by Katamari, but it's &?%$ unpossible to find.

So I ask:

What is the perfect PS2 game for getting home after a frustrating day at work, grabbing a beer, throwing yourself into a comfortable chair and playing consequence-free "RAAAHH!" experiences that don't require prolonged attention spans or month-long commitments to enjoy?

Hmm.

Hmm.

Well, I can't really recommend Mercenaries highly enough - You can go in for the long haul, or just for a couple of missions, but it's the breadth of the thing; if you want, you can plunk money down and have the Merchants of Menace drop your desired mode of transport (all the way up to a UN helicopter) down for you, and you can go and hunt out the Deck of 52. Plus, the MoM website in the game also orchestrates Artillery strikes, bombing runs, and only gets more insane as the game goes on, and will drop supplies for mundane things like C4, ammunition etc.

Entire hours can be sent tooling around a fictional North Korea, on the lookout for the Deck Peoples, occasionally wandering into towns and rigging statues of the dictator with C4 and reaping the bonus points.

It'll also keep you going for a while, too; good longevity.

Apart from that, I recommend Kuri Kuri Mix if you can get a copy fairly cheaply, but that's better with two people ( although playable with one), and... Well, how could I forget the majesty that is Dynasty Warriors, which I think is now up to the fifth iteration?

You literally just turn up, plug in, and drop your chosen hero from the fictionalised Romance of the Three kingdoms setting onto a battlefield, and work from there, stopping enemy reinforcements, battling enemy heroes, collecting weapons and items; you can blitz for the objective or take your time, but it's pretty, it's relentless, and it's fun.

Three words: God of War.

Oh, and four more...

God of War Two.

They will make you happy. Pretty worlds they may be, but there is smashing in abundance.

Oh, also... buy Guitar Hero II, and a second guitar if you have people likely to play with you.

Even if you think the idea sounds a bit naff, or if you think it's not your sort of thing, trust me. It rocks in a very serious way, especially when you want something to just pick up play when you get home.

Dude, I STARTED the Guitar Hero II thread. I know the power, but sometimes I want to smash face instead of rock out.

D'oh... so you did. Then God of War / 2 it is, then.

For destroying things in merciless, bloody ways and sucking out their soul, you really can't beat the Legacy of Kain series. Oh, and there's great voice acting and story there as well. ^_^
