magick and swords

Are there any occult traditions that don't treat swords as overly large pointers? In all the books I've read, swords are just used to inscribe circles on the ground or draw pentagrams in the air and that is all well and good, but you can do these things with a dagger or your finger.

I've created a rather large sigil on cardboard, suspended it 'tween two trees, and after charging, banished it by hacking it to pices with my sword. I don't reccomend this for everyone/every incantation, certainly. The intent of the spell was getting over some bad feelings and to stop being so serious. It was cathartically fun, and it freaked out my neighboor.

I can see where a sword wouldn't be appropriate for every magical situation, but I think it could be utilized in ways other than drawing circles and the like. For example, I just got finished reading The Stars Asunder and the mages in this book generate energy for their rituals by fighting with staves. I think it would be interesting to see if this technique could actually be utilized in real life. But, since I don't belong to any magicl groups and the only local ones are wiccan, I will simply have to try and develop a method it could be used for solo.

There was an old thread that some of us participated in some months ago on using Martial Arts for magical purposes.

It seems to have been destroyed a while back (when I do a search for it, the link pulls up the 'sex magic' thread instead).

I think I've got the thread saved on my home computer. I'll check it out and see if anything there is appropriate to your question.

Can't find anything like this on the web, ecxept the House Dreamblade thang on the Chaos Matrix, which isn't exactly traditional. I dunno what you could look into... Vikings? Samuri?

You could invoke Tyr: Sword of justice, that sort of thing. They also work well for warding.

Second on the Tai Chi, as well. Forms meditations in martial arts with weapons are very different than open handed forms.

I was going to suggest this as well. Here's the link here.

Had a scan of it myself and it does look a bit daunting if you're just starting out.
