Currently running itunes on version 5. but it won't transfer several songs (most of my purchased music) to my old ipod. What I want to do is revert back to an older platform (4.7) but so far I'm pulling hair out trying to do this. Anyone willing to post a step by step help list for uninstalling and reintalling itunes for me? Running on a mac Powerbook G4.

Yes, this is an apparent issue for others, as well. Did you update to 5.01? I think that fixes it.

Alternatively, the way to fix this is to deauthorize your computer and then reauthorize it. I believe I read this in the most recent MacWorld. I would try Googling the issue, though.

actually, it might be a Tiger problem:

After I upgraded to Tiger, songs I had purchased from the iTunes Music Store stopped syncing with my iPod and no longer played in iTunes.

For some reason, upgrading to Tiger confuses many Macs when it comes to iTunes Music Store content. I’ve witnessed people connecting their iPods after an upgrade to Tiger, only to find that their purchased music wouldn’t sync as it had before. And the first time I launched iTunes after upgrading, I could select a purchased song in iTunes, but when I attempted to play it on the Mac, nothing happened. If you’re having this problem, the solution is simple: select Deauthorize Computer from iTunes’ Advanced menu, and then double-click on one of your protected purchased music files. iTunes will prompt you to enter your password, and it will then connect to a server to reestablish your ability to play and transfer those files (don’t worry, iTunes won’t interpret this procedure as adding another authorized computer).

Thanks for the reply - I'm still on OS.X before Tiger, and the message that comes up now is that my ipod software is too old - I tried to update it but then got a message saying that I couldn't update the ipod software on my current operating system, even though it is older than the system it suggests.

Ah, I see.

The iPod Updater is a separate thing to iTunes - have you downloaded the latest version of that?

I have - when trying to instal that, I get the message that I can't do it through my current operating system. Is it just a case of everything overtaking my machines? Time to update the OS and the ipod? Both a couple of years old?

Hmm. According to Apple's page, you should only need 10.3.4 or later, not Tiger. I assume you've installed the updates for Panther and are after that.

Post up the exact wording of the error message and I'll see what I can find....

Error message reads "You cannot install this software on this volume. This update requires Mac OS 10.2.8 or higher" for the ipod updater - I'm currently on 10.3.9.

The message from itunes says "Some of the songs in the itunes music library were not copied to the ipod "Benny The Ball's iPod" because upir iPod software is too old"

Thank you, Apple, for making sure that for some reason the installer for iTunes 5.0 has thus far crashed my computer every time I tried to run it, saving me from the dreadful mistake of upgrading to this version.

Speaking as an avowed Apple fan, of course.

I forgot to ask, are you Repairing your Permissions semi-regularly?

I'd honestly do that right away. Repair, Restart, Install the updates and see what happens.

As for reverting to an earlier version...I've never exactly tried that, but I'm sure you can find an older download on the Apple site, just download and install, it should roll your iTunes back to whatever version the new download is.

Repaired permissions (do it once ever few months - but just performed it) - nada. Same messages come up. Try to install the older version of itunes, and get told that it is locked as there is a newer version. Should I be heading for an apple store?

I would perhaps wait for another update, which is probably imminent. It seems to be a problem that Apple is aware of and has said they are working on another update that fixes it. I'm unsure if 5.01 fixes it or not, but if it's a problem that's out there, they will likely make sure it is fixed before long.

iTunes +Music Store + iPods are their big thing at the moment, so they'll take care of it.

I can't think of any real solution. I don't know of any sites that have old versions of iTunes etc that you can download - I might have one somewhere, I have Panther and Tiger install discs which should have them on, if you get desperate. This sounds definitely like a bug since you clearly have the system requirements and I'd *assume* that they'll fix it, like Keith says, but... I hate to say it, but this is what happens when you buy closed DRMed music that's dependent on a single application. When that app breaks you're screwed.

That distant sound you hear is Cory Doctorow shouting "I told you so!"

I have a fair amount of purchased music but I burn it and re-rip it - my hifi system such as it is (Powerbook speakers, basically) doesn't notice any loss of quality. I would really like to get away from using iTunes completely so I'm never tempted, but the problem is that iTunes is a really good music player and it's killed the Mac competition. I could use Audion, or even XMMS, but it's hard to drag oneself away from the fast searching, smart playlists and so on.

Please sirs - I have a question. Is it possible to pull the tunes off an iPod and put them on a hard drive? Just in case, for my laptop goes into the shop tomorrow...

Here's a year-old article, which may be outdated.

This links to some software which may still work.

yes. but you will need a piece of freeware to do it.

not sure if you are on a mac or pc, but the mac route is using something like Senuti.

the website/documentation can explain it's operation much clearer than i can, but basically you start the application (it looks a bit like iTunes) and it has options to copy whichever files you want from the iPod to your hard drive.

here are some PC versions.

You can also do it through the Terminal; the iPod is mounted as a drive, and while the filenames aren't preserved, the files are all there. It shows up as /Volumes/(name of iPod)

FYI: New iTunes 6.0 is released today.

Might fix your problems.

You know what? I think I'll stick with itunes 4.9 for the time being...

Benny the Ball

I'd advise that, Sleaze. 6.0 has done nothing for my trouble, can't get purchased music over to my ipod, can't update my ipod software, can't revert my itunes back to a version that did recognise the purchased music and send it to the ipod. I think my ipod is broken to be honest. I played something the other day and it went onto a random shuffle at high speed through all the songs.

Also, has anyone else experiened trouble purchasing music from the istore of late? I kep getting a message that says 'item being modifyied, please try again later'?

Anybody know how I can import a WMA file into iTunes for Mac? 10.4.8 OS, iTunes 7.

You might need to convert the file into an MP3 or AAC or something, Matt. If so, you might find this free online media converter useful.
