I want to buy your rubbish laptop

Dear barbelith London, do you have a shit ancient laptop lying about in a cupboard somewhere not being used? I want to buy it off you. It only needs to run a version of Word, any ancient version of Word will do. It doesnt need to access the internet, play games, or even have a CD drive. All I want to do is be able to write on it without having to sit at a desk. Can you help? I don't really want to pay more than £200, even less if I can. Do you own such a rare and fantastical beast and will you sell it to me?

I totally do! And I totally want to get rid of it! But I am not in London. But I am near London. But I am not likely to come to London for a bit. But if you pay postage I will post it to you.

Oh, hang on. The thing with it is that the battery doesn't seem to work. So you do have to sit at a desk to use it. But maybe you could buy another battery for it? Hmm. I will look on the hinternet and see if it is possible to buy batteries for shit ancient laptops or if they have stopped making them.

I live in the US and I have a rubbish laptop that I could mail. The battery works fine, last I checked, and it will go on the internet, although I gave someone the 56k modem that I used to use in it, so it has a very slow modem in it. Barbelith works fine on it. The CD drive is broken, and has been for years. I have a floppy drive for it. I'd need some time to get my files off of it (I haven't used it in a year, but it still has my old files, and I don't have them on floppys).

Can you plug an American computer in in London? I've never tried.

It is, usually, depending on age and make - umm... will dig up the name of the supplier. When my Dell battery died I got a replacement on eBay, although the problem with that is that the battery you're buying has probably seen a fair chunk of use also...

Incidentally, could I recommend that people exchanging computers _securely delete_ all the information on the laptop and then reinstall either Windows or a proper operating system? Deleting things does not delete them, especially not with Windows, and that PC's data may then fall into hands either untrustworthy or official.

Deva, if it's possible to get a replacement battery then I'm definitely interested. I just want to use it for writing so I have a bit more flexibility where and when I can work on stuff. Depending on how near London you live, I can probably travel to pick it up. I think we've met, very briefly, at your birthday drinks earlier in the year. How much you thinking of selling it for.

Fuckbaked: Postage from the US might be prohibitive, but thanks for the offer.

Haus: Are you implying that I'm untrustworthy and official?

Dariks Boot and Nuke (DBAN) - secure hard drive erasure

There are a few other progs to do this out there if you cant burn or write to a disk, tell me ill find another.
JUst formating doesnt erase a harddrive, best to overwrite with the gutmann algorithim or something similar.

Gutmann's good - personally I take them out and hit them with hammers afterwards, but that does limit resale value.

Gypsy - not at all. Only that the laptop might pass into the hands of others who are.

Most certainly is... Carry case and XP/Office included - bargain!

Been lying around here for awhile to be honest.

lekvar: I'm not at home right now, and probably won't get home until tonight, so I'll have a look at it then and think about the price and then pm you.

I'm also in the market for one so if Gypsy doesn't want Deva's or Kayfabe's I'll have the one he doesn't want (if that makes any sense) - don't care about batteries...

Hello, sorry, have been flu-ish the last couple of days and not going on the internet. When I get home I will look at the laptop so I can tell you what it is and what it does, and then someone can take it off my hands, hooray!

Hello chaps. I really really need a basic laptop at the moment, so if anyone has a redundant but functional one lying around, would you consider flogging it to me? Would prefer PC on grounds of compatibility with desktop, also version compatible with XP 2003 (I know, but I didn't have any choice in this matter). Please help! I can't face trying to buy one from a salesman.

I have a working laptop so old it's beige. I paid £125 for it a few years ago and will take offers. It's REALLY old and quite slow but it's got Word and IE, although I've never tried emailing on it.

I basically used it as a word processor, but have a better one now. I wrote a script and a few stories on it - only tiresomeness really is that it has a floppy drive but no CD or USB. Anyone want it?

we have a supa ol' PC lap top hanging about the shack here in NH USA if someone wants it. I will be happy to rebuild it. All I ask is that you pay for shipping.

PM me as i will most likely not wander back into this thread in a timely fashion.
