Lecanomancy

A thread for the discussion of the ancient art of divination through pools of water and their ripples.

As far as I know lecanomancy is an ancient form of divination most probably created by the Assyrians who would drop stones covered in symbols into a basin of water whilst asking a question. The patterns and ripples on the surface of the water would be observed and determine the answer.

I can’t actually find much more about it than this, but what I have read has certainly piqued my curiosity. The term itself seems to cover a variety of forms of divination all revolving around the basin of water theme. For example some articles suggest that it is done by viewing swirling patters of oil floating on the water, other articles talk about listening to the sound and observing the ripples when a pebble or stone is dropped into the pool. Either way no article I have read about it has been any longer than two paragraphs, which unfortunately falls quite short of satiating my interest.

Personally I haven’t done much divination work in the past, but I am looking to try it out. I think I will probably build up to lecanomancy; get a feel for divination in general first with better documented methods. Still, I am curious if any of you have any knowledge of lecanomancy, any tips on its use, any personal experiences that are worth sharing or any links that might shed more light than two paragraphs?

Aside from general background I read a very short article that suggested this bible passage about Joseph was a reference to lecanomancy:

Is not this [cup] it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth??And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine? - Gen. 44:5,15

The closest ive come to this kind of divination is through watching monnlight on the sea (fullmoon helps) and sunlight off of the thames this summer, both instances produce a dazzling display of light and patterns that continually express themselve as intermingling transitions forming brief shapes that the brain organizes into structures for fractions of time.

Not only is this very beautiful, but it could be argued, may be used as a tool to reveal unconscious imagery.
The process reminds me of staring at patterns in clouds or wall paper, artex etc With the exception that light dancing upon water contains motion, time has been added to the forms in space.

Some startling awareness of ones mind can be discovered, especially if the light is allowed past the eye and into the mind itself without comprehension.
