Tech advice sought: audio file converter?

I need an audio file converter (mp3 to wav and back again), preferably one that can handle batches. Any suggestions (the cheaper the better)?

I had an excellent freeware file converter on my old computer, but a lightning strike fried the hard-drive, and I haven't been able to find the program again online (now I can't even remember what it was called). After that, it rankles to pay $20 for a program that will do what my old one did for free. Yes, I'm cheap.

Thanks (he said hopefully)!

Cheetah Audio converter will do what you want, though I don't know whether it'll do batches. Look around on download.com for another if it's no good. Hope that helps.

I use the dBpowerAMP Music Converter and it works every time.

I use CDEx. It's primarily a CD ripper, but it'll batch convert wav files to mp3, too.

Snap files is great for free software solutions particularly ip/tcp tools, check out audacity as well, nice little app imo.

iTunes will do it. Maybe a bit of a convoluted process (put the files you want converting into a playlist, higlight all and then select Convert To WAV/MP3 - or whatever format you've selected for importing, in the main preferences) but it's free...

Cool, thanks! I'll check 'em all out, and see what sticks.

One of the many convertors I use is this. I will convert in batches, and - importantly for me since I frequently use .ogg file types - will convert just about anything to anything.

Download it, then - in the registration box - use the following to make it the full version:

Name: Anthrax / FFF
Code: 31415927-3158-31415927

Another vote for CDex on Windows, very easy to use in batch.

If you want an MP3 encoder on OS X you could look at Audion which is now free. Personally I prefer using lame from the command line.

small, simple, and very effective - WinLame. Much better than the name would have you believe.
