ICC Super Series.

I've never seen a Super Series but this looks like it's going to be a great short series right before England go on to tour Pakistan.

3 pajama games, 1 Super Six Day Test Match.

Is any excited about this besides me? If you are let's post our squads and get the discussion underway.

I'm not particularly bothered by who wins these games. I'm just going to enjoy the cricket and keep an eye on how our young bowlers go. My main priority at this point is building a team to get our ashes back.

I heard from a mate in Oz that the tickets haven't been selling too well, possibly due to the price. Watching on tele this morning, there were plenty of empty seats.

255 for Australia. I don't think it will be enough, but we're in with a chance. Good effort from the World XI to get the initiative back after a good start from the Aussies.

I can't say that these games have enthused me greatly. Australia won the first one pretty easily with the highlight of the game being Pietersen taking a catch.

In other {threadrotty} news: it looks like Simon Jones is out of the tour to Pakistan with his injured ankle needing surgery. Shame.

the icc have decreed these games to have full international status. does this bother anyone?

the world team isn't a real team, it hasn't played together, yet each member of the squad has impeccable credentials. so, if the aussies overcome them so easily the whole series, their averages go up and the world players' go down. if, however, form prevails and the world team get on top of the aussies simply because they always have a great player to come in and bat or bowl next, how is this fair either way on the players and their 'real' international match averages?

...and why should anyone be so het up with their statistics anyway?

i tipped a white wash to the aussies and still go with that. in the one dayers, anyway. in the test arena, it is all too hard to tell... we should prevail.

anyway, a six day test; be a right shame if we win in two and a half days!!

I don't agree with the games having international status, but not enough to lose any sleep over.

I reckon it could go either way. Both teams have the players to win, and the ODIs could go either way without really telling us who was the better team. As for the test match, I expect it to be pretty even but I couldn't predict who will win in the end. You really need a test series to establish who is the better team.

If only the last ashes series was just one test ...

ooh aah glenn mcgrath is out of the side for tonight's second game of the series - his state compatriot clark [clarke? too many clarks!] is in for him, on debut. be nice to get a wicket - dun'madda who, it'll be one to brag about!!

i don't see the sense of a six day test. used to have six day tests but one was a rest day, back when they were all fat bastards who couldn't run about for five days straight. fitter players now. why six days? simply a gimmick and an extra day of ticket sales at already inflated prices...

(danny vettori was happy enough about a quarter-filled arena: "back in new zealand we don't git this minny to a mitch" he opined...)

Christ what an embarassing little series. I had such high hopes. The first game I wasn't convinced that Australia had returned to form because ROWXI played like a school team. Second game, clearly dominated by a superior team. Game 3 in an hour, I'm hoping they at least give a better performance in this one. Sixday test is a gimmick for sales yes. Most games last four days at best these days and if it's being played at the same dome, it means no rain and we won't be seeing more than four days of play.

I'm crushed to hear Jones can't make the tour to Pakistan. I'm not sure which side I'm supporting (am Pakistani but have always been a fan of England) but if both sides give it their all, it should be great cricket.

I very much want to see a good series, it shouldn't be all downhill from such a thrilling summer of Ashes.

the mock-test is being played at the sunny, very much outdoor, sydney cricket ground, krug, not under the roof - that would be a first! - but the weather is generally fine if a little breezy in mid-late spring.

yesterday's collapse of the world side was evidence of the qualities of a team vs a collective of excellent players... anyone (including many of the commentators, i noted) who suggests these guys are so good they should get out there and play their game and get on with it misses the whole point about what 'team' means. at this level of sport, it seems that understanding each other is worth a great deal on raw stats that say how good someone is supposed to be.

i like hussey and watson a lot. want to see michael clarke get a bit more form; mebbe in sydney..?

Yes you might be right, but I think a complete lack of individual performances (except for Gayle, Sangakara) sort of say something else.

I should just bloody well root for the Aussies and enjoy the test.

Having been not particularly enthused by the one dayers I found that I was quite keen to find out what happened in the first day of the test. Hayden bullying a ton and Gilchrist smashing a run-a-ball 90-odd when it looked like Australia were wobbling. Just what the Aussies couldn't do this summer. I shall be following this one with interest.

Shows to a certain extent what happens if you don't have people analysing the game of opposition players with prominant weaknesses (like Hayden) and then bowling and fielding with discipline to those plans. Or in other words, see the teamwork stuff upthread.

I'm glad for Gilchrist though, thrilling player.
