As a spin off from Toksik's thread (which I heartily recommend - go on, get over there now) Loomis and myself mooted a possible barbemeet north of the border in the next few weeks. Anyone interested, and if so, anyone have any ideas or times to suggest. Just to kick things off, can I suggest the weekend of the 8th October, maybe in Edinburgh, as the last one was in Glasgow?

in principle i am upfor it, but i am hidden behind deadline season at the moment and will be unable to promise until my sense of perspective returns.

week or two would prolly be cool though.

Hmm, unfortunately we can't do Sat 8th. I can do Friday 7th (solo, as Ariadne is away), or otherwise we can both do either Fri or Sat of the next weekend. Is that any good for you guys?

I think it would be nice if we can find a weekend when TTT and NG get some time free away from Amaya, as they need a spot of company these days that doesn't involve shitty nappies (then again, the way some meets go...). Possibly even meal-type stuff rather than (only) boozing? There's a very nice Thai place in the West End, Songkran (easy for Haymarket for Tox and Fox, easy for us local bus-wise). Ooooorrrr, we could go for Mexican at Pancho Villa which has the added benefit of being within stumbling distance of chez moi so the Weegies could kip on sofa/floor if necessary. Handy for the No35 parent-wise, too.

The weekend of the 15th is fine with me. As for food, I could go for that, as long as the proposed venue isn't too pricey: I'm feeling poor this month having paid some course fees.

15th good for me, too - payday.

Loomis
11:18 / 30.09.05
That all sounds good, as long as the meal doesn't price anybody out of it.

Axolotl
12:20 / 30.09.05
I'd say we provisionally confirm the date as the 15th and sort out the meal/no meal question nearer the time. Basically because I'm rubbish at financial planning (or for that matter planning of any kind) and have no idea what my finances will be like then.

Loomis
13:07 / 30.09.05
I'm sure we can save cash by finding a BYOB* restaurant.

Oh, the joy of Bucky baby bottles. The gift that keeps on giving.

Tom Tit's Tot: A Girl!
11:01 / 03.10.05
Pfft. Please. That baby doesn't have a chance against Amaya.

We'd be able to do the 15th, but it would have to start fairly early, as we'd have to pick the Antichrist by 9PM at the latest.

That suit everyone?

Toksik, thank you so much for that picture. Perhaps it's just the sleep deprivation, but I've just spent the last 10 minutes laughing my ass off at it. I needed that.

*bump*
My finances are looking increasingly poor. If we could keep this on the cheap I'd appreciate it.

Loomis
20:13 / 10.10.05
Well I'm keen for whatever the consensus is, and cheap is always popular. Maybe a pub that serves food will give options for all?

WHat sort of kick-off time are we looking at?

Axolotl
13:58 / 11.10.05
A pub that serves food sounds like a reasonable compromise. I've no idea about venues, not having ventured over to Edinburgh in over 2 years, so I'll leave that up to others.
As for rendezvous times, I guess that we're looking at a fairly early kick off time, which suits me as it would allow me to catch the bus/train back to Glasgow.
Looking over that post it's singularly unhelpful and can be summed up as "I dunno, I'm easy?"

Loomis
14:58 / 11.10.05
Any time's fine by me. Tom Tit Tot and Nobody's Girl are the earlybirds so what time would you two like to kick off?

Ariadne
06:23 / 12.10.05
A pub suggestion: Milne's Bar on Rose Street is big, does food and real ale, and is easy to get to from the station. It can be really busy but should be ok early on.

Tom Tit's Tot: A Girl!
21:08 / 12.10.05
How is everyone for 6PM?

Ariadne
21:24 / 12.10.05
6pm's good for us. Milne's Bar, then, or does anyone have other suggestions?

■
06:22 / 13.10.05
OK, yer on. Any new lurkers willing to show their faces this time? I'm sure I've seen some new bods registered as being in the Gods' own country.

Axolotl
07:34 / 13.10.05
Sounds good to me.

Loomis
14:15 / 14.10.05
So ... we're all set then for 6pm tomorrow night at Milnes?

We'll be there!

That was fun (says he, hobbling from supine sofa to the keyboard) and I thought I'd show you the cameratoss results:
Pub Toss
The other toss photo (click the photie above and scroll down) has almost hit 5,000 views. That's an insane number for Flickr.

Yes, it was fun. It was less fun being woken up by the Scotrail employee having fallen asleep on the train. I guess I'm just lucky the train terminated at Glasgow, otherwise who knows where I would have ended up.
Good photos by the way.

*Hahh*

That's what you get for never checking the Gathering then. I'm really prejudiced against Edinburgh, anyway, having spent two miserable years of University there; would like a Glasgow meet sometime soonish?

Axolotl
10:56 / 19.10.05
Sounds good. In my limited experience Barbe-meets are always good for a laugh, and I'm always up for a trip down the pub. Do you want to start a new thread for it?

The Falcon
20:38 / 20.10.05
Could just carry on here; actually, I see legendary Edinboro d'n'b night Manga are offering discount tix for Ghost in the Shell 2 if you go to their 4 or 5/11 nights, which sounds quite the doubler.

Orrrr, there's Melt Banana (!) at Oran Mor, Glesca, on 12/11.

?

Loomis
07:09 / 21.10.05
Dirty Three are playing Glasgow on the 19th Nov I believe. Anyone interested in that?

Axolotl
09:34 / 21.10.05
Melt Banana could be a laugh, I know they're a barb-favourite.
I'm not so keen on the Manga night, iirc it's quite expensive, even if you factor in the cheap cinema tickets.
Loomis - I've never heard of the Dirty Three, what are they like (& am I revealing a horrible gap in my musical knowledge)?

If any Barbeloids are interested, Frank Quitely and Jamie Grant will be appearing at the Glasgow Comic Mart at the Henry Wood Hall on November 27th. More details can be found here.

Phox - Dirty Three are a long-established Australian three piece of violin, guitar and drums. The violin player is Warren Ellis who plays with the bad seeds. They're very moody, intense, kind of like the more atmospheric stuff of the bad seeds but without vocals.

I've not seen them live but by all accounts they are phenomenal.

The Falcon
22:55 / 21.10.05
Well, I think I'll defo go to the comic-mart regardless.

Hope the guy from FutureShock ain't there, or if he is, he doesn't clock me. I hate your implicit obligation with pull-lists, and that's why I've rubbered your shop, mate.

Quite apart from the jumpers. Guh.

Yeah, Dirty Three. I've always had them on the periphery of my musico-vision. I used to really be into Big Cat records when they were on that, but i don't think i've ever actually heard them. First time for everything.

Duncan, if you haven't already, I'd suggest checking out Red Hot Comics - despite the dodgy-sounding name, they offer an excellent service for ordering by mail directly from Previews. Red Hot will also have tables at the Mart.
