How Loathsome

So, er, do I have to pretend this is 7 soldiers thread to stop it plummeting?

How Loathsome is one of those indy no-superhero comics where realistic people do realistic things but it's still interesting. I read it and thought 'this is Barbelith's comic for sure' yet found no thread on it.

Anyone?

Sorry, linky to the beautiful thing. I should say it's not very like gloom cookie, except in it's damningly accurate portrayal of Goth.

"Part “Queer as Folk,” part “Trainspotting,” this deeply personal, sexually bizarre, drug-addled adventure is a gothic exploration of the not-so obvious nature of gender. Collects the 4 issue mini-series.
Advocate Magazine's top ten Graphic Novel of the Year"

Recommended for adults of course, although typically I found it in the children's section of the local library (it's got jacking up scenes, strap-on three way sex and drug deals gone bad, and it was next to 'Clone Wars' the graphic novel. Feck's sake!)

That webpage does say to me "Hey! Check me out! I have girl-on-girl action boys!" What would you say to that?

I'd say that's an odd reaction that doesn't appear to bear much relation to the comic itself.

I think How Loathsome would appear to be very good at capturing a subculture, or more accurately a small range of subcultures. The things I find appealing about it and the things I find irritating about it are the things I find appealing and irritating about those subcultures.

I quite like Nick as a character, in as much as 'like' is the right word for such a person.

I'd say read it, there's no girl on girl action. Lots of agonising soulsearching about gender relations, the BDSM scene and self loathing though.
The characters are excellently defined- Nick is very like some people I know, and as a Brightonian I pass clones of the supporting cast every day (we are the UKs SanFran) and the main character is based on a real person quite accurately apparently.
Petey's right though, if self-searching genderbending and Goth aren't to your taste it'll irritate you. Personally I like to watch :]

I enjoyed it. It put me in mind of a kind of goth/BDSM take on something like Optic Nerve. I could see it getting quite irritating if it went on too long, but as Fly says, I think that would be more to do with the "scene" itself having an irritating component. There's only so much narcissistic self-loathing a guy can take, you know? The trade's about the right length, though. Is it ongoing, or was that it? I could still handle a bit more... just not, y'know, years.
