Campbell's Quest for the Father

Does anyone know which book of Joseph Campbell's best delves into his "Quest/Journey for the Father?" The ones I've seen just brush up on the subject; I'd like something that goes into a bit more detail, even if it's by another author. Thanks!

Not in 'Heroes Journey'? Also please put a thread summary on this fellow.
Not to waste the thread, perhaps we could expand it to a discussion of Joseph Campbell's influence on magic or vice versa, how he tries to mainstream magic as anthropology.

What books have you been reading that brush against it? Anything you'd like to tell all the dear readers who don't know anything about Campbell? Are you interested in information about Patrician Gods or Father archetypes in magic, 'cause there's plenty of stuff people can tell you depending on what you already know.

I think there's a section on it in Hero With A Thousand Faces... but then, perhaps that's what you're referring to?

From what I recall, The Hero w/a Thousand Faces touches on it just a few times, and not with much depth. Same for the Power of Myth and (I think) Myths to Live By.

That's all I've read of Campbell, but a few weeks ago at a bookstore, I went through the indexes of all the Campbell books they had in stock, and in each, the father quest was only mentioned in passing. The idea I got from each of these mentions was that Campbell had already expounded on the subject somewhere else...I'm just wondering where.

I haven't read many other books on the monomyth, but I am interested in the subject. And Campbell is a fascinating individual.

As for the thread summary...could one of the moderators throw one on there? I forgot to add one when I made my first post...!

The guy who really goes into the Quest for the Father stuff is Robert Bly, in Iron John. You may also be able to find some Father writing in the multivolume edition of Campbell's collected essays on world religions.

Here's the obligatory wikipedia link, summary added (a general Campbell one) and I'll look at my copy of 'The Innner Reaches..' tonight and see if it's in there.

As the thread author you have the power (like He-Man) to edit the topic including adding a summary. So y'know.

Quantum, thanks for the tip. I didn't know I could do that.

Check this out from wikipedia-

the American novelist Kurt Vonnegut satirized Campbell's views as being excessively baroque by offering his interpretation of the monomyth, called the 'In The Hole' theory; loosely defined as "The hero gets into trouble. The hero gets out of trouble."

Heh, typically Kurt.
