Needles and thread: On finding a Tailor

I didn't want to interrupt the bespoke thread, but I Need to know, oh wise and beautiful Barbelith - how does one find a tailor?

I'm not looking for a custom suit, I just need to find someone to do the little things- repair zippers, buttons, take up cuffs, fit shirts, etc.

What should one look for when selecting a tailor? What separates a good tailor from a hack?

I'm not too knowledgable about this, but if there's a Moss Bros near you, go there.

Try the Yellow Pages.

Not being flippant, but you can try a place out with some small job and if you like what they did, and their price, then you can go back with more complicated work for them.

And I don't see how this conversation interrupts the bespoke thread at all!

Legba Rex-
Unless my Google-Fu has failed me, I'm on the wrong landmass to take advantage of their services.
Anna-
Barring a referral, that was my plan exactly. The problem is I've never been to a tailor before and I loathe wandering into a situation without getting at least a little information.

Are you in London? I'll post a name and number when I pick it up from my shop.
Also, try your local dry cleaners. I, in fact, just took my jeans in for a hem today to mine.
Too bad if you're not in Pasadena where the world's best(and drunkest most often) Cuban tailor resides and repairs.

Closer to Pasadena than London, actually. Bay Area, CA. Any good, drunken Cuban tailors up here?

Well, isn't San Francisco rather known for it's fine Chinese laundries with immaculate garment repair artists?
Otherwise you could drive down to Pasadena and I could try to remember the address of my old dear tailor of the cuban rumness.
IMHO, not unlike herbalist and alternative medicine specialists, only very old men and women can perform perfect tailorisms.

Lilly - if I could have that number it would be great - I have a pair of suit trousers that need taking in and a waistcoat repairing.

I'll post it later today as soon as I find it. I assume you mean the London one...

Ok so later today, from me, always means days and days later. Anyway, Haus sir, here's the tailor: Andrew Christou, 0207 249 1701. I think he's in Highbury. Is very recommended.
