IPod Nano

I just want to hear some opinions on the new iPod nano. I am wanting to purchase an iPod soonish, and I want to hear some different perspectives on the various models. I am a huge music fan, and I am just not sure if 1,000 songs is enough...but the size is so friggin' convenient.

Welllll, I quite like the idea of the nano thing as an adjunct to a 'proper' iPod. I see the 60GB thing as a sort of alternative album catalogue, whereas the smaller doodah might be a sort of 'greatest hits' singles collectiony thing.

I suppose it just depends on your listening habits, really. I've only got about 2000 songs on my 3G 20GB iPod (I've never quite filled it up) and there's stuff I never seem to listen to (but still keep on there, just in case...). My main iTunes library is on a seperate drive at home and I just add/remove to the iPod as I fancy. I've never considered my iPod as a permanent storage place. All of which has got me considering getting a Nano. Having fondled and ogled one, I can confirm that they are indeed very small, beautiful and desirable things. Can't really justify the expense, but, y'know...

So, if you really need to carry as much of your music with you as possible at all times, then go 60GB, but otherwise I'd say you can live quite happily with 6GB (as long as you don't mind updating the contents every now and then). And they really are tiny.

I have a 60GB Creative MP3 player and to be honest, I could do with a bit more room. I don't have a pc to store all my music on so it's where I keep my music.
Plus it's a great thing to know you have almost all your cd's in your pocket.

1,000 songs wouldn't be enough for me. I have a 20GB iRiver mp3 player - and I think it's great, although I am running out of space on it.
Personally, I think the various iPod offerings are just style over substance, I've heard lots of negativity over the battery life. And when my old flatmate used my PC with his iPod, iTunes caused it to run SO! VERY! VERY! SLOWLY!
So, yeah, I'm not a huge fan of iPods.

Your PC ran slow because iTunes was installed? Or because your flatmate was transferring tracks over USB1, perhaps....? I guess the battery life could be an issue (on older models, but I've usually managed to charge mine in time), but the Nano goes for 14 hours, apparently. As for style over substance, I can't really say, having only ever had a quick play with friends' other MP3 players, but I I do love the Apple design and interface (especially the Nano...)

The battery life on the Nano should - theoretically - be longer than the previous models, because the Nano is Flash-based memory (i.e. a little microchip) as opposed to a magnetic hard drive (i.e. a little machine with moving parts). One of the main causes of battery drain in the iPod is the hard-drive spinning and accessing music files when you press the "skip" button.

The solid-state flash memory is the real bonus - no moving parts to skip or, as camron points out, needlessly drain the battery. The minus sde is at the moment the flashbased ipods handle at most 1000 songs (probably less if yo uare using larger file formats than Apple's proprietary AAC format...).

The nano is pobably best suited for people who use their music player in the gym...

I really want a nano even though I already have an ipod...

Yeah, I just bought a new iPod (my second) last year, and already I'm drooling over the Nano, trying to figure out a way I can justify it ("well, if I use the Nano in the gym and keep my main iPod hooked up to my stereo...")

Sick, isn't it?

despite having over 50gb of music on my pc, my 4gb mini ipod suits me fine. I just use it for my favourite music. The little sister got an iPod Nano yesterday and they are indeed gorgeous. I've heard some people say the screen cracks very easily though.

Apple are really pushing out the boat with the advertising on the Nano. There is a full page ad in the Guardian today and I saw one in the Irish Independent last week. There is also an interview with Steve Jobs in the Guardian today.

4gb really isn't enough...but once you've held the nano in your hand, it's not too difficult to convince yourself otherwise. It's just that nice. The size is perfect and the thing is so thin and solid seeming that it's easy to imagine that it contains no electronics and instead works by magic. My 2nd gen 20gb iPod is doing just fine after almost three years of faithful service, but I've found myself hoping that something will go wrong with it just before they announce an 8gb nano.

With the nano...since it is indeed much smaller, would it still work on the big stereo hookups?

Oh, and by the way, Cameron, nice work on Seaguy.

would it still work on the big stereo hookups?

Yes.

Mini-jack goes in the headphone socket as per. If you mean about using it with a dock, I believe there are special adaptors for that. It's a win/win situation...

Mike/M**m: Yep, my PC ran slowly because iTunes was on it. iTunes wasn't actually open or anything, it was just running in the background for whatever reason. My PC came back to life once I killed the process.
I just really don't like any MP3 player that you can't use without special software. With my iRiver, I can just drag and drop stuff through Explorer, and then it's ready to go. This is just my opinion, though - some people like to have iTunes or some nice interface to manage their music collection, but personally I prefer to do it myself.

Apple works on fix for minor screen flaw on nanos

I'm dying to get one as I'vet to purchase an iPod (my sister got one and she can't live without hers) and intentionally waited for these to come out after the Shuffle debuted (flash memory is just so much cooler and tougher than a damn laptop hard drive slung into a case. My pen drive has survived two accidental washings and worked like a charm... something i don't recommend experimenting with).

I wonder how big a hit Apple will take on the screens - even if their estimation of a 0.1 percent failure rate is correct, that's a huge number...

Cloud: if you have a PC, I believe eftunes is highly spoken of as an alternative to iTunes which also allows file dragging and dropping...

I'm using a 3G 20GB iPod. It holds about a third of my collection, only problem is if it held evey song I have bar one, the one missing would still be the song required at 3am at the other side of the city. I'm holding out for something a little more sustantial than the nano before I use up another well earned birthday / christmas present.

Was also kind of hoping for some sort of AV connection to the telly, it's an awful long trip from the couch to the DVD's to the TV. In fact it's so long I don't usually bother.
