Hi All,

I'll be going to Vancouver at the end of this week. I'm going to be crashing with one of my best friends; however, he's got a day job, so I'm going to be left to my own devices during the daylight hours. Does anyone have suggestions on what is essential viewing and/or eating in Van?

I'll be on the lookout for:

-Touristy sites: is there anything that I absolutely have to see and/or avoid?

-Stores: cool places to buy clothes and souvenirs

-Restaurants: what's the best sushi restaurant in Van? Indian? Chinese?

-Comic Book store: geek that I am, I don't want to be without my weekly comic book fix. What store is recommended for browsing/buying?

Also, I'll be in Van for two weeks, so if any local Vancouver based barbeloid is up for a gathering, I'd be open to that.

And if anyone knows of any social service jobs in the city...

Let's just say I'm looking.

Golden Age Collectibles on Granville ... about half a block from Robson Street ... is my favourite comic shop in Van. Sushi, you're going to want to stick to Robson and hit Tsunami, or go down to Denman and Davie for Tanpopo. Don't think I've actually had Indian food in Van, now that I think about it.

don't try to go to a bar after midnight. there are none. really really weird.

if you find one, beware of troublemakers and RMP.

The aquarium is quite nice. Visit that.

RMP? What's that? Sorry, it's getting late and the ol' brain is tired.

Royal Mounted Police. I was sort of joking about that...but...we did have a weird run in one night at an "after-hours" bar. All the other bars had closed down except for one, and it was insane. Tons of police around the place outside. Chased and beat down two guys that came barreling out of the bar.

Apparently, I was a bit drunker than I remember and my friends tell me I was yelling "Fuck the police! That's police brutality!" and came dangerously close to being spotted. I remember the action and me saying "that's bullshit!" but not the other stuff...friend swear it's true, though.

Still...odd town that closes down really early.

Really? Weird. It entirely depends on the night, because I've had nights out until six in the morning in Vancouver. Most places let out around 2 or 2:30, but there are a few after-hours. I've only really experienced one after-hours, the World, and that was once because it costs an arm and a leg to get in and it was one of those birthday deals.

IIRC, Sonar's still pretty good - it's down near Gastown, I think. Unfortunately, you've missed the Symphony of Lights firework displays that go on through the summer, but there's plenty to do otherwise.

Food, food, food: place called Han, I think, which I haven't been to yet but will probably go next time I'm in town; it's a Chinese restaurant which looks-wise is nothing special, but they specialize in big sharing situations, and I know they have a seperate vegetarian kitchen to prevent cross-contamination. I haven't had a chance to try it out, but I like the idea.

Commercial Drive out in Burnaby direction is a pretty ghetto place but there's lots of little shops (some comics ones I think, as well)- it's a strange place at times. Bukowski's is on Commercial, and it's well worth checking out. Good restaurant. I was on Commercial with some friends one evening and encountered a drunk stilt-walker who followed us for six blocks, kind of thing.

The commercial district in Burnaby is not ghetto! I went to school at Burquitlam.

Now New Westminster, THAT is ghetto!

Umm. I suggest coming to Coquitlam. Because my home town can always use a boost in economy.

In Vancouver, Granville Island all the way. Wonderful stuff all around. Good food, to. Stanley Park is also nice for a walk, or at least it was when I was a kid. Its entirely possible that the entire place has been invaded by crack addicted ninja-pirates with chainsaws since then.

Yeah, i can't really back up my claim, but the time that i was there, everything was closed and shut down by midnight every night. we were there over the weekend, too, so these were Thur-Sat nights.

Sounds like you're there already. But if you have web access and happen to see this:

Sushi restaurant, cheap cheerful and very good: Tokyo Joe's. It's a local chain with several locations, I believe. I'd sit in my favorite one and eat gyoza dumplings and sushi until they threw me out.
