Whee, this is my first topic. How thoroughly exciting.

Anyway, I'm going to be bumming around New York for the couple of weeks before Christmas at the end of the year. Considering that I'm nineteen years old, my partying options are somewhat limited (and will have to wait until I hit up Montreal over Christmas), so I think I'll splurge and go shopping instead. Unfortunately, my funds are rather limited (pity me, for I am a poor Linguistics student from a country with a shitty exchange rate), so I was hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction for chic, anachronistic, excitingly beauheau and (relatively) inexpensive clothing in NYC.

Ta, much appreciated.

I live here. And I have no idea what the term "inexpensive" means anymore. I'm as lost as you are!

I've been imagining an endless parade of alternatively funky shops lining the streets of SoHo, TriBeCa and the East Village.

Has television been lying to me?! Ye Gods.

This place has reviews and info for various NYC stores with maps of the main shopping areas. Finding interesting clothes on the cheap isn't easy though, especially in areas like SoHo and the East Village. Even the second hand clothing stores there are insanely expensive and any cheap places will have been completely picked over by stylists or people selling on to the pricer outlets (Screaming Mimi's or Andy's Chee-pees are two major offenders here). Search the online archives of the Village Voice, Time Out NY and New York Magazine and you're sure to find some guides that might point you in the right direction.
