Putting Text In A Picture Box

Often, people's images get broken. Maybe they've decided to use their webspace for something else, or perhaps the site doesn't allow remote linking. When this happens, we're left with a nasty empty box.

Is there a way to specify some explanative text to appear here and would it be worthwhile?

I've been putting broken images up for moderation where I've seen them, replacing the icon with [broken image]. It just stops the offending post from being an itch in the corner of your eye, makes the thread less ugly.

That's only if it's a post within an old thread that's been bumped, mind - if it's something recent, it makes more sense to PM the poster and ask them if they can replace it with a working link.

Would using the "alt" or "title" attribute in the img tag solve the problem?

Probably, but given how much begging/browbeating it took to get people to resize things, I don't see it happening.

some folks'll do it if we ask.
we might even start a trend.

altcore motherfuckers carin' about access!
altcore motherfuckers usin' the alt-text!

Legba, just in case you don't know (and for anyone else who doesn't but wants to use alt text) the code should look like this -

<img src="http://www.michielb.nl/mt/foto/msg-1094314382-17278-0Afbeelding139.jpg" width="300" alt="The Man.">

which will produce this -

The Man.

and if the image is broken, this -

The Man.

Like Randy, though, I tend to just delete broken images where I see them.

Why don't we put that in the 'posting images' bit of the wiki?

I'm not sure that it helps. At least with a broken image link, or a note of the same, anybody reading the thread will still be able to understand it. Replacing an image with a description of what it was could easily make it more confusing than anything else.

There's not actually anything there to say that it was an image, is there.

How about "The Man (pic)"?
