It's Me Or The Dog

I'm amazed that this show has been on (Wednesdays, 8.30pm, C4) for three weeks and no one here seems to have mentioned it. The latest addition to Four's roster of what one poster (it may well have been Ganesh) called "pull your socks up, young man" shows, it features families who have been brought to the end of their tethers by their undisciplined dogs, receiving advice from dog behaviour expert Victoria Stilwell, who claims never to have been bitten in fifteen years' professional dog-handling.

So far, so humdrum. Until you factor in hordes of very cute but completely uncontrollable pooches haring around, BARKBARKBARKing and leaping at the camera like Sam Raimi nightmare demons, harassed husbands who haven't been able to sleep with their wives for months because Teddy Pom-pom rules the bedroom with his iron paws, weird but apparently effective instructions like learning to bark the way dogs do when they tell each other off (!)... and best of all for fans of the Blatant Subtext of Kim and Aggie, Supernanny, Naomi Cleaver and co., Miss Stilwell herself, an Emma Peel-ish English rose whom the producers have seen fit to style like Tura Satana.

I'd just like to add that my girlfriend just laughed like a drain at the fact that the last word in the text of this Google advert on the C4 microsite linked to above...

Dog Behaviour Problems?
Put An End To Your Dog Behaviour Problems. Amazing Results. Aff.

... was thought by me to be an onomatopoeic doggy exclamation, and not, as she explained to me, short for "affiliate".

I am very scared of Stilwell, I watched an episode of this and the dogs basically just did what she told them to. The scary part was that the humans did too. If she walked up to me in the street and told me to sit on the floor I suspect that I might just do so automatically. I recommend this programme to anyone who misses their dominatrix while she's on holiday. It's rare to find someone who projects that much sheer power on a reality TV show... of course she is an actress as well.

Haven't seen this, but read a review claiming that, when her 'dog psychology' failed to resolve the errant canine behaviour, Stilwell simply argued (successfully) that the animal in question be neutered. This would seem to take her beyond 'dominatrix' and into 'extreme edge-play'...
