50 People See...

Flickr.com is an online photo gallery of sorts that has some really nice features, one of which including tags. Many users tagged their personal photography with the same thing (like "eye" or "soup") and posted it online and flickr organized it in the same catagory. This user then made a program to merge 50 random pictures from the same catagory together. Each of the 50 pictures used is from a different person, completely random. He did not edit any of the results except to bring out the highlights and lowlights (as in, he did not shape anything).

(please look at some of it before you read on...)

It makes me think of...

...how similar we think to take our photography.

...how similar we think to describe our photography.

...how eerily good our eye is at searching for concepts and objects familiar to us in something foreign.

Does this move you in any way? Or is it simply random blots? Is it random blots until you know how it was made (that's how I felt)? Or are you such a hardcore artist that anything abstract you understand instantly and adore?

"Sadness and happiness" moved me immediately. Notice how similar they are in tone. Unlike the season photo, where I could pick up on the color differences for each, sadness and happiness were almost the same. An apt interpretation of how each person feels each emotion differently.

I rather saw directions in the sadness and happiness, the sad one having a general downward trend, and the opposite for happiness. That whole thing is freaking beautiful - as a Flickr addict myself, I love finding stuff like that. Thanks!

Gorgeous stuff. Some of them remind me of the Shroud of Turin for some reason. Especially the candle one.

those are great, i think my favorite was the soup, it just struck me as very interesting that 50 people would even photograph a bowl of soup, let alone post it to the internet.

this is a fairly common occurance in beginning drawing and photo classes. It happens because most people have an ideal in their head of what they are drawing or photographing and not actually taking the time to 'look' or 'see' what is physically there. I could explain that further if anyone wants to discuss it.

that's a good site, thanks for sharing

This is very much like the artwork of Jason Salavon, where he's done the same thing with decades' worth of Playboy Playmates, weddings, graduation photos, and video streams of three late-night talk shows:

I think they're fantastic. Really beautiful. I liked the soup, eye and candles best.
