I had another idea for when we get going...people could submit sound sigil memes or mantras, and we can broadcast them.

Or just funny sound bites people want to make.

I'm the only person in this forum, aren't I?

no, not quite.
i can do voice work for anyone who would require it, if that helps.
i wont be able to promise much of my time otheriwse.
i'd love to be able to show off my digital deejay skills as well, but i dont want to lie to you about my likelihood to pull off anything like a weekly set.

you should also look into getting DeeJays local/friendly to barbelith to record live sets at gigs. i know for a fact that i could get at least one monthly party crew and one weekly team who would be up for the exposure and who would rip.
i am sure i am not alone.

what about it came from the sea, huntig lodge, etc?
i'd certainly be interested in hearing a live recording from the nights mentioned on here that i cant get to.
it would be a great way to enhance the community aspect of the board, and it might be a shot in the arm for many of our local bands and heck, maybe even boost the traffic in the creation.

could we have readings and lectures as well?
i like the idea of plays and so on, but i love the idea of someone with a good voice doing a read through of a barbelith classic. perhaps we could even get 'names' to do releveant topics and books.

i dunno anymore.
its been a long weekend and i'm just freestylin.

Every idea you just brought here is an excellent one. I want this to be a big community-bringer-together-er, so we should definitely do like, a weekly or a bi-weekly event.

well, if anyone wants me to read a barbelith book, i'm game.
i'm thinking some of the entry level theory texts that folk suggest as primers when asked, but i guess i could try most anything.

barthes at bedtime!

is that last idea really one you liked?
cos i was a bit worried it was too old school radio to captivate the kids.

i'll also ask the guys running this big ass party how they all feel about the idea of doing some live recordings at some stage.

I love compiling mix CDs because secretly I want to DJ in a Radio 2 style. I'd be happy to submit hours and hours of songs, but obviously copyright is a problem with that.

No problem providing a couple of hours of material by friends of mine who are happy to get the exposure though, top quality underground folk and/or hip-hop.

Also readings- there's loads of stuff I'd gladly read aloud (I read quite well apparently) including articles and stories and shit I and my friends've written.

How about a thought for the day section? INteresting word of the day? There's lots of possibilities, I think the practical considerations are the obstacle.

i'm still thinking about this.
please dont let it die.

Toksik, don't worry, I won't let this die. I've just had alot of schooling to do, and I worked every weekend for the last month, and have had little free time for The Project, so I conditionally resigned from my job.

I'm still working on this.

cool.
the important thing is that you dont let it die for want of asking any of us for help.
you might not get what you need, but you almost certainly will.
if you have a need or an issue, post about it.
if you need some phonecalls made, some emails sent, some research done; pretty much all of that is easily done by anyone.

keep it going!

Toksik, I'm glad you're as enthused about this as I am. I've got a spare computer to set up a server with, and I think that I can stream music primitively for free until I can get a proper DJ program I like, but my biggest concern is still how we can get the rights to play liscensed music without spending alot of money. If we can get it for free, that would be even better...but I wouldn't count on it.

i have spoken to sevearal folks,
many of whom seem interested by the prospect of some airplay, however limited an audience.
anyone any further on with this?

just noticed these threads.

i will would love to contribute a weekly show. I could certainly put together an hour or so of music a week.

i produce my own music, as well, so have some aptitude with various pieces of software and middling to good understanding of audio production, if necessary. and i can make beats, yo!

anyway, if you are interested, i can help out.

i think this might be a project that happens slowly.
i hope not, but i get that feeling.
i also feel that we might be unhappy with the first version, however long it takes.
i say lets get a shitty version together soon and make it better and better over time.

where did you get to, oddman?

I would definitely listen to something like this and give feedback, and I hope it happens— soonish would be cool. I'm no musician and I can't code, so I'm afraid I can't really assist. I'll cheerlead the people doing this, if that's any help.

Alright guys, I've got a day off of school, so I'm trying to make a weak-ass v.1 of Barbelith Radio for right now...

I hope to have a Barbelith Radio Station that we can be proud of ready for launch over the Christmas break.

This sounds great, i'd be up for doing a weekly mix show. not sure what else i can do but if there's anything needed i'll do my best. I could possibly arrange some guest appearances from other music producers/dj's if that's appropriate?

Perhaps it's a bit wank of an idea, but maybe the way in which people ought to approach this concept is that it's the distilled audio feed from the Barbelith satellite. Which I would imagine is just MAD. Anything original that goes through it ought to be in short bursts, by random turns humorous, frightening, informative, infuriating, arousing, confusing, soothing, jarring and back to humorous, though not necessarily in that order and certainly more than one of these descriptions at once. We must have faith that the data, so to speak, that ought to reach the right people will find them at the right moment.

For good examples of successful online audio ventures, I'd check out both WFMU's live feed and the Church of the Subgenius' Hour of Slack weekly shows; maybe also Negativland's Over the Edge broadcasts, too. Some synthesis of those I'd think ought to be our goal.

i think that should be the station ident.
when i had a go at radio MCing we had a bunch of samples we could fire off in between songs that didnt link well.
i can imagine your bits working well in that capacity.

or are you thinking phone in?

"hi. i was wondering if you could..."
"SHHHTOPP VININK UND ADAPPT!"
"uh, yeah... but, y'seee..."
"SHHHTOPP VININK UND ADAPPT!"
"dr, i fail to..."
"SHHHTOPP VININK UND ADAPPT!"

sorta thing?

Good ideas guys.

I like the Barbelith Feed Transmission idea. Very cool. I'm working on a VERY VERY primitive setup right now. I'll get back to you guys and hopefully I'll have something to shoot into your ears by the weekend.

17:35 / 17.11.05
Wait wait wait...That came out wrong, and I need to clarify: The streaming radio will hopefully be up by Christmas, while the primitive podcast should be up by this weekend. I'm just going to experiment around with it a bit, throw some Barbelith sounding tunes on it, and my own inane ramblings as filler. PM me with song ideas, if you like, because the whole point of this project is to please everyone involved with Barbelith. Or even PM me with some sort of special message you want sent out to Barbelith in our first ever attempt at Audio Glory. Well, first since I've been here, anyway.

Oh, and I was wondering if any of you musically inclined people would want to storm up some sort of instrumental/lyricless Official Barbelith Theme Song to play during the into, or whenever a DJ speaks or something to that effect.

Personally, I think it should have some static, some beeps, with some sort or surrealistic undertones like that song that is playing near the end of "Vanilla Sky" when they are in the elevator. It's by a Nancy Wilson and is titled "Elevator Beat" on the soundtrack. It's number 15. Ah hell, just go listen yourself.

I'm not saying thats how it should be, but that's just a close example to what was in my head, with the surrealistic pleasantness of it all.

all you really need is a a loop, hey.
well, and a program that can play it looped.
i think if you have a wee download you'll find some good stuff.
plastichead did a 12" of nothing but loops, i think. the one i'm thinking of was about fifty ambient techno loops for layering up in a set. (quite handy for three deck action as well, seeing as they played round the record without spiralling in)

alternatively, you could ask Saveloy if he would let you use some of his tracks.
he was doing some electronica that he asked for vocalists on a while back, and i remember thinking it was all pretty good, if a little hard to come up with vocals to.

So, I'm confused as to what will be streamed versus what's podcasted. My idea of how it could work is podcast the special events (talks, readings, barbemusic, etc.) and then have a schedule of various board members streaming their favorite songs for the rest of the day. No idea if this is feasible logistically at all or not, but thought I'd throw it out there. Oh, and I volunteer to DJ some if we find a way to use copyrighted music.

hey.
i started a RadioFantasy thread in the conversation for folks to share fantasies of ideal radio, and i figured there may be some overlap in interest with the readers of this thread.
(i'd also like to bump this in an effort to keep the idea on the barbelith radar. even without oddman as a constant presence on the board, i reckon his idea has legs.)

perhaps a roll call of those interested in contributing, so that some kind of schedule could be suggested? we'll need to know how much airtime we can fill (and how often) before we can plan any kind of streamed radio.

i'd suggest that podcasts are better than streams to begin with but, even if we go with that, we'll still need to know how many of those we'll be able to have and how often so that we can construct a homepage and a reliable rss feed for people to subscribe to.

has anyone else had any thoughts recently?

Yep, I'm more than happy to send discs out to anyone who fancies a go. PM me with your address and I'll bung you a disc. For the present and the near future it'll be the same stuff that I sent out for this thing here but I'm planning on cranking some new crap out sooner or later, depending on time to myself and all that.

Have you seen the notion on Queergranny about Radio Free Barbelith?

I don't remember where the idea came from so it's likely to have been before my time. It certainly appears to be a very old page since a lot of the ficsuit names are from long ago and those people are now called other things, and the detailed listing on Persephone's site is quite obviously a joke.

I wondered if there was an old thread about it but I've Googled 'Radio Free Barbelith' and nothing relevant comes up other than Persephone's Queergranny page.

Even though that page is a gag-a-minute it might be worth asking some of those people if they were actually interested in doing something. You never know.

what's your excuse?

odd as it may sound, I think I'd actually tune in for Nietzsch E. Coyote's Hour of Existential madness or The Quietness of Classic Silence
