Hey all. I know this may be a lot to ask, but it would mean a hell of a lot to me if we can pull it off.

In November 2003 I went to see Melt Banana. My life was in a very different shape back then. It was the day after I left my wife. I was hung over, I'd hardly slept for a week, hardly eaten, was having nasty asthma attacks and was generally looking and feeling a state.

As soon as I set foot in the venue it was like that was all blown away. I felt euphoric, the best I'd ever felt up to that point. Some of my best friends from Barbelith had met up with me in the afternoon, some of my best friends were at the gig. It was one of the best nights of my life.

Fast forward two years. My life is extremely different. I’m in the band I always wanted to be in and now I have a chance to take things full circle and give the last couple of years some nice semi-symmetrical closure. Melt Banana are in the country and have a few dates free in mid-to-late November.

It’s our intention to put them on in Southampton, and have Hunting Lodge on as support. I fucking love the idea and I really want to make it happen.

Here’s the catch. Melt Banana have a £600.00 guaranteed fee that we’d have to pay them regardless of how it goes on the night in terms of door sales. That doesn’t include the cost of hiring the venue, so this could run to about £800.00 or more.

So here’s the idea. We’re looking to split the up-front costs and therefore deaden the risk over a large group of people. We’re going to do our utmost to make it work and make a profit, but that’s not the goal: the goal is to put on the best gig Southampton has ever seen and not lose money into the bargain. To that end, we’re going to do a hell of a lot of work to promote it as widely as possible.

I’m looking for sponsors. Already I’ve had four friends get in touch to offer their assistance, offering amounts as high as £50.00. Now ideally I don’t want any one person to take too large a hit if we don’t break even. I’m thinking that the idea is to pay out proportionately to what people put in. So if the cost of the venue plus band is £800.00, you put in £20.00 and we make £1,600 you might get £40.00 back. It’s much more likely that you’ll get somewhere between £10.00 and £25.00, though. Southampton ain’t a great music town. I reckon people will travel to see Melt Banana, but it’s still risky.

Of course, it might not come off at all. We might not be able to find a venue. The band might lose the dates they’re still available. If that’s the case any contributor gets back what they put in. I’m thinking of doing this all via cheques and Paypal in case anyone’s already thinking logistics.

If you’re up for this then send me a PM or an email to seth_cooke@hotmail.com. If it comes off and you want to come I’m sure we can find you crash space.

Help me bookend two years of my life with Melt Banana!

(The reason this is in Conversation is because I want it to get as much traffic as possible between now and tomorrow, because we’ll have to try and get moving on this by then. If you’d like to contribute let me know ASAP.)

So the more people, the less risk per person. Game on!

Seth
18:26 / 12.09.05
FYI, since lunchtime I've been able to raise £270.00.

So this stands a decent chance...

Seth
18:52 / 12.09.05
You mean corrective oral surgery?

18:56 / 12.09.05
Sooomething like that.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
18:58 / 12.09.05
Thank Christ for that.

Thought he meant Oral Roberts. I was a bit afeared for your soul.

19:06 / 12.09.05
I've hardly slept in three nights and I'm already stupidly excited about the mere possibility of sharing the stage with this band in my home town...

Cherielabombe
20:46 / 12.09.05
I like the idea, but I won't give you Oral.

Seth
23:48 / 12.09.05
You like the idea?

Then nurture the idea. x

mondo a-go-go
12:11 / 13.09.05
This is a great idea, I hope it works out. I'll put in a tenner. But I'm not sure how, since I don't do Paypal. I could send you a cheque?

Seth
17:01 / 13.09.05
Yep, a cheque is fine. Thank you!

We put in the offer to get Melt Banana earlier today. I plan to contact everyone who has expressed an interest when the details for the band, venue and date are more concrete.

We're going great guns at the moment. Any more for any more?

Ganesh
17:03 / 13.09.05
What's the timescale? PayPal always works best at the end of the month...

Seth
17:16 / 13.09.05
Timescale-wise we're waiting for a definite response from Melt Banana before we know whether it's on or not.

Once we have that I'll send round a bunch of emails and PMs letting people know Paypal details, addresses, and how long we have to pull each stage of the organisation together.

I've texted our singer for any more definite information, you'll know when I know.

Seth
18:06 / 13.09.05
I've just been forwarded a ton of info on their requirements PA spec. Oh, to be in a proper band...

When I say proper, I mean earning.

Looks like there'll be some more definite information after 17th September, which is the deadline for people wanting to book them.

Lilly Nowhere Late
18:10 / 13.09.05
Forgive me Seth but I don't even know who this band is. If you haven't already done so, would it be worth telling them how much effort you're putting into putting them on so they have the opportunity to waive/reduce their normal fees, etc? There are always bands who love to play for love of it rather than just for who can afford to pay.
Anyhoos, best of luck.
(isn't it easier to just come and play in stokie?)

Squirmelia
09:44 / 14.09.05
I'd definitely send £10 by paypal.

Would be much better to see them than Cradle of Filth.

Kit-Cat Club
09:53 / 14.09.05
Seth, donation as we said last night - will pay by cheque...

Seth
12:56 / 14.09.05
Squirmelia and KCC: thank you! Yes, this will be substantially better than Cradle of Filth...

Lilly: Melt Banana are a punk band from Japan. They're ridiculously fast, very poppy, and they have a tendency to break people's heads on first few listens. PM me your home address and I'll send you a CD.

This is why I particularly want to have them put on in Southampton: they'd inspire a lot of people. Melt Banana are the kind of band that makes you realise that you have to raise your game.

We're up to twenty contributors and we could still do with more. Would anyone else like to put in their stake?

One final thing... just had this text from our singer who's doing the organisng: ...ok looks like we got m.b. ...!

I haven't been able to reach him to get any more info yet, I'll let you know as soon as I know anything. But I guess now we're looking for a venue in earnest!

The best of several Melt Banana threads.

All that's to come Anna. I'm going to send a round of texts, emails and PMs to everyone who has expressed and interest when I know a little more.

Blimey, I missed this thread. Hunting Lodge and Melt Banana sounds like a night and a half. Put me down for £20. Might need crash space for two people.

freaky synchronicities ahoy

Seth
16:03 / 14.09.05
Thanks just another guy and Gypsy.

The latest news is that we have them booked for Monday 21st November.

More to come on timescales and definite arrangements when I know it.

We know a lot of shit hot bands who'd jump at the chance to play with Melt Banana, so this should be a fucking awesome night.

The extent to which I'm into this idea probably goes without saying;

If you're still in the cash raising process Seth, drop me a line and I'll see what I can do!

It's official: Melt Banana are playing Southampton Joiners 21st November 2005.

Support is likely to be from Hunting Lodge and Sodding Wolfshead.

I've sent a load of PMs, texts and emails to everyone who is contributing or has expressed an interest in some other capacity.

There's other stuff you can help with in terms of helping out with the rider, buying local beer for the band, cooking, promotional stuff, accomodation, etc. Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to do some of that.

In terms of getting in free on the night it goes without saying that anyone who contributes financially will be on the door, and also part of the Barbelith-Cooler-Than-Cool-Club.

In terms of other people getting in free that's very unlikely, but on a discretionary basis depending on how much help you can give with the organising and other stuff.

If I've missed you out from the mailshot with payment details and other stuff then please let me know and I'll correct my heinous mistake.

If you'd still like to contribute, we'll we still need more cash! So drop me an email to seth_cooke@hotmail.com or send me a PM and I'll send you the details.
