I found out the other day that the word 'Chav' is derived from the Romany for child, but 'Pikey' is a derogatory term for Gypsies, from the Turnpikes they used to travel. (I also discovered the Romany people were originally from India but sixteenth century English misconception labelled them as from Egypt, thus Gypsies).
Now both words are synonyms for 'Townie' (UK) despite originally being opposites.
Is this ironic? Not in the way that there being only one monopolies and mergers commission is ironic, but I think so.
This thread for ironic things you've come across, or things you're not sure are ironic, also for those still not quite getting the distinction between the metal and the rhetorical device. Like Alanis. The 'Derogatory Class Rhetoric' thread in the Headshop for more serious discussion please, flip nonsense only here. |
