Turning CD Tracks into MP3s?

Or WAV files for that matter.

How can it be done for free? What software do you need?

Uh... almost anything.iTunes will do it. If you're using Windows, there's a very good free program called CDex. Audacity will do it as well, but it's overfeatured for your needs.

Some usertips for CDEx:

When using CDEx you need to set some of the options (under 'options', surprisingly)
Need to set the minimum bitrate, 192 is typically a good balance between quality & filesize

you can set the filename output format (I normally use %1-%2(%Y)\%7-%4, which results in artist-album(year)\song no - song title)

and you can set the ID tags. Normally both V1 and V2.

hopefully this is of use

You can also usually automatically download the track titles and authors from the Gracenote remote CDDB.

Oh, and to encode to MP3 I think you have to download the LAME codec from somewhere else and drop it into the program file - there will be instructions on the site.

I use dBpowerAMP Music Converter. You can convert your CD songs into wavs, mp3s, whatever. It´s very good.

I like Mediamonkey, myself, as the library and player synchoniser is pretty nice. Also does OGGs.

I have been quite pleased with Audiograbber. It even properly rips tracks that are too scratched for iTunes to deal with. An excellent program which I highly recommend.
