The shuffle of cards.

I am probably not the only one to notice this but ive found it to be a major part of my personal tarot readings.
shuffling cards for me has become a kind of trance technique, i focus heavily on the sound of the cards being shuffled and use the riddum to induce trance. also the physical motion of the hands, really feeling the motion and sensation and paying concerted attention to the sound of the cards. I may do this for 1 minute or 10 minutes depending on how long it takes to achieve an open state before a reading.

Any body else care to share trance techniques they use before an act of divination?

I don't trance but this is relevant-
When I read for a client a part of my ritual is to get them to shuffle and split the deck into 3 (to the left with the left hand preferably) then hover their hand over the piles until one gives them a sensation of warmth or tingling or chill or whatever, then read that pile. Makes the reading more accurate, and also scuppers sceptics pretty effectively (love the look on their face).

Yeah, I use the shuffling of the cards as a way of getting into the divinatory space.

What I do is make a bit of a ritual of my readings. I start by washing my hands under a cold tap for a while. Then I call upon my various non-corporeal allies to help me out a bit, reverse one-third of the cards, then shuffle for some minutes while telling the cards about the punter and what ze wants to know. Like "general reading for Fred Bloggs... general reading for Fred Bloggs..." or "Jane Smith wants to know about her health." It really helps me get in the zone.

I always shuffle, then deal cards off in synch with my breathing until I've been through the deck - 1, 2, 3 in, 1, 2, 3, hold, 1, 2, 3, out, 1, 2, 3, hold and so on until I've been through the lot.

And yeah, it definately helps. Although I've been doing some hypnosis / NLP study recently which has lead me to think about new ways of strengthening this process.
