Agreed - SCTTSLT is excellent, and a more fully realised work than others I've read by him. I felt that Alan was less well drawn than most of the other characters, but Davey in particular is utterly memorable. I'm continually impressed by Doctorow's output [post-edited: I mean his whole output, not just his fiction: his EFF work, BoingBoing, public speaking] - I think I have more goodwill towards Cory D than most other people on earth. Also: how did you read it? I read it as a plaintext on a Palm - probably the longest work I've attempted on the tiny screen (I'm in the habit of downloading articles and short stories for those interstices in the day).
I found the naming conceit very engaging, and the family structure (I'm trying to avoid spoilers here; sorry for the circumlocution) is unparalleled: it makes for a challenge when someone askes what you're reading about, though... |
