Has anyone read Cory Doctorow's Someone Comes To Town, Someone Leaves Town?

Hi! I'm a long-time lurker here (though mostly on the comics board), just wanted to talk about this book a bit- see if anyones interested. It's quite a heady book... very very different from his previous two. Heck, it doesn't even fit neatly into a genre, per say. It's about a man named Alan, his rather odd family, a blood feud between him and a deceased brother (!), wifi and alienation. It's astonishingly... humane, too. I think this book really seals Cory's name as one of the best writers around today. The books available free on Cory's site (craphound.com) in a variety of formats.

Agreed - SCTTSLT is excellent, and a more fully realised work than others I've read by him. I felt that Alan was less well drawn than most of the other characters, but Davey in particular is utterly memorable. I'm continually impressed by Doctorow's output [post-edited: I mean his whole output, not just his fiction: his EFF work, BoingBoing, public speaking] - I think I have more goodwill towards Cory D than most other people on earth. Also: how did you read it? I read it as a plaintext on a Palm - probably the longest work I've attempted on the tiny screen (I'm in the habit of downloading articles and short stories for those interstices in the day).

I found the naming conceit very engaging, and the family structure (I'm trying to avoid spoilers here; sorry for the circumlocution) is unparalleled: it makes for a challenge when someone askes what you're reading about, though...

I just started it today (.pdf on the desktop), and I've already started quoting passages at people. Immediately engaged, and I want Alan's house.
