Wake Me Up When September Ends...

Hello everyone. I am new to the board, and I go by the name Oddman. For my first post I would like to ask anyone and everyone about school. What grade are you going into? What are your career prospectives? What kind of parties does your school have?

Pranks, uncomfortable chairs, and hot hot girls who wear those weird high thongs, anything about school, and what makes it worth going to.

I'll start.

I am in Grade 12 in Canada. I am heading towards a career in journalism, and I just got a job at the local movie rental facility. I am excited for this year mostly because of potential girlfriends and the new basketball season.

Next.

oh, and career perspectives... I want to pursue a career in film. related to this are the fact that I participated in the 48 Hour Film Festival earlier this summer, just got home from a two week film workshop about two weeks ago, am currently chest deep in my film-related eagle project, hope to get a film-related internship later in the school year (internships are part of the curriculum), and am in the market for a Super 8 camera (which I plan to use to make a short I've been wanting to make for quite some time).

as for parties... I think I've missed out on all the parties this summer. the last of the summer was Sunday night, but I couldn't go because I was slaving over a CD design I'm doing for a friend of a friend

I started my senior year today. It seems like it will be nice, mainly because I have seriously laxed up my schedule from last year. See, last year I was doing IB diploma (which for the unacquainted, means fun classes with too much hard work) which was stressful enough to lead to a nervous breakdown. This year I am chilling out and having fun in some computer-oriented classes (Computer Science, being an IT lackey), doing art, and German, which is a fun language. Despite all the sunny sunshineness about this year, I am still feeling iffy about colleges and careers. Oy.

So do I. A school in America. Then I could be in detention with a mismatched bunch of kids with whom I came to bond in a wacky kind of way. I could wear a parka and chuck salami (or possibly bologna) at stuff. And end up in a pink frock by the end of the film.

I'm not helping, am I?

I'm a brand new baby Library Science student this semester. I'm a trifle nervous, since in one class, I was told that we were weirder than other people, and that by the end of the class, we'd be even weirder. In the other class, I was informed that catalogers are weird, antisocial, pasty, cat-owning OCD freaks. So apparently I'm finally in the right field.

Fast Times at Barbelith High!

Somehow, I suspect I'd find it all as miserable as round one.

I teach college students and, must say, finals week can't come fast enough...

Going back to secondary school would be kind of interesting...

...although I guess I'd stick out even more than I did first time round. What with being 33 and everything.

They don't make versions of me in High School Stereotype Generatorâ„¢. I'd end up being a mash of Xander, Slater, Archie, Tracy Flick, and that kid who strips at night in Summer School.

Some are big fuckers. American football players, e.g.--especially the offensive linemen.

I mean that in the politest sense of the term.

For benefit of clueless europeans, what does grade 12 mean in Canada? When I was in school (in England) it was all 1st, 2nd, 3rd year until the pinnacle of all achievements 6th form, which was curiously divided into lower and upper!! Though just to make it super confusing for anyone not born into system, you had 1st to 4th year at Primary school (age 5-11), then you started back in 1st year again at Secondary school.....

I went to school in New Zealand. Between Primary School and Secondary School I was fortunate to have two years in Intermediate School! It was all down hill from there so I'd hate to go back....

What I have never got to grips with in Britain is, what is the difference between all the labels given to secondary schools, such as, Grammar, Comprehensive, Secondary Modern etc???

I'm going to college. My college rocks. We skip class to play roleplaying board games and have two big screen tvs in the student center on which to play video games. And, if perchance we do go to class? We have supa-speed wireless everywhere, so people just sit in class playing World of Warcraft with the people in the Student Center.

Oh, yeah, I'm supposed to be learning, right?

Far too grizzled to go to school but, as a firm believer in September being the real new year, will make school-type resolutions for September.
Comprising
1) Buy new pencil case and rainbow rubber for desk utilisation
2) Go to work on bike in sensible shoes
3) Collect conkers when the leaves go lovely and golden brown, until I am the winner of all conker wars
4) Make a packed lunch the night before
5) Do freshers week drinking binge

What resolutions would you make?

Come friendly bombs and fall on High Schools everywhere. I am so jealous of the yoof of today with all their playthings that I may have to paint acne scars on a voodoo doll and be revenged that way.

Thank Valen that I teach fully grown, extra ripe adults.

I feel like I will be going back to school, since I work at a university and the influx of students will begin in a few weeks. Tonight, I am going to check out evening classes at a local college and am hoping there might be a suitable photography course for me to do.

I also like to think of September/October as being like a new year and the time when changes happen. There's always a buzz of excitement in the air, because there are so many new people around and Autumn begins to appear. Anything could happen.

I have bought a new green pen.

I'm starting a new job very soon, and am at home posting this when I should really be weeding the garden or ironing, so it kind of feels like summer holidays to me at the moment. Woolly's post made me want to do young things again, like all the drinking I never did in my first year of college because I was convinced I secretly had a Hulk-like temper that would have me turning over tables after half a shandy. Not true, I hasten to add - I'm either voluble or moody when drinking, never violent.

And is there honey still for tea? I'm sorry, let's leave this thread to the actually young people.

Ok Daynah, your college sounds like...well, a frikken mindgasm.

And in Response to Modern Maenad, Grade 12 in Canada, (except for Ontario) is my senior year of high school, which means that after this year, I start College/University.

Astrojax69, I have tried alchol, and it was fun, but I am about 6'5 and almost 200 pounds, so I didn't get drunk. I'm thinking that my alchol tolerance will be pretty high.
And yes, I am in journalism for the ladies 110%...I am actually trying to bring back the Rockstar Journalist lifestyle. It's gonna be sweet.

And Nina, yes your post counts.

Sad Robot, I am in Alberta, and I love it here.

I would like to thank you all for posting so much on my very first thread. It's been a very friendly reception.

What resolutions would you make?

I like woolly's idea of non-schoolers picking the best bits of the a new term anyway. I will be:

6) buying a spectrum of new excercise books from WHSmiths
7) inventing my own school uniform. Wearing it. Hanging out in Trafalgar Square wearing prefect badge and ticking off anyone whose clothes deviate from uniform. 'Wilkins! Shirt too emo! Don't make me have to tell you again! Lindeman! Socks are not regulation rubber! Report to Head!'

Wait, is the college with wireless an American "college", i.e., University, or is it a British college, which is, ummm, I think, more like high school? I get so confused!

I ask, because if you are paying to be in an American university and doing this, well, that's just spoiled and fucked.

In my, of course, very humble opinion.

I've got one last science credit before I get my associates. Here I come, Pricipals of Biology. Which, by the way, is taught by my most hated professor. But we have fun hating each other (in the strange way that it's fun to have enemies), and the other day we learned where plutonium comes from and why it sucks, so it isn't all bad.
