I was told the same thing by the Red Cross. It was kind of a sad scene --first they said, they needed people who knew spreadsheets & databases. Then they said, they needed people who were available during business hours. So it was like the people who knew spreadsheets & databases looking unhappily at the people who were available during business hours, and vice versa.
But I do understand, they do need a regular staff during business hours & they just can't leave the doors open for volunteers at night. And I'm sure they're under pressure to keep their administrative costs down, and not the other direction.
There's really only one guarentee, which is that YOU will have some kind of an interesting/learning experience.
I'm glad to have your perspective, pants brigade. As in the charities thread in Head Shop, I think a lot about what the greater good is. Half the time I think it's unethical for me to be so underemployed --soon to be unemployed. I.e., if I really want to make an impact in the redistribution of wealth, I need to be taking as much money out of the system as privilege allows... |
