What makes a sports person into an Icon?

I guess 'icon' is a bit vague but there are sports people who have masssive visibility beyond their sports, whose names have passed into the everyday language.

The examples that occur to me instantly are Pele and Muhammad Ali. Very few people the world over don't know these names.

So, who else in sport has crossed the line from sports personality to icon, and why do we think this happens?

More later.

I think there's a big difference between sporting icons like Pele and Ali, and even many of today's icons like Zinedine Zidane or Ronaldo, and the likes of David Beckham.
Pele and Ali elevated their chosen sports to an art, at their best, whereas Beckham showed fleeting flashes of brilliance which were shoved down our throats through marketing.
So I guess you become and icon when either a) you make your chosen sport look beautiful, on a fairly objective level, or b) you have a pretty face/famous wife/"interesting" choice of haircut which can be used to sell stuff.

Maybe Pele & Ali could be better classed as 'legend' than icon.
Actually, icon to me implies someone who is a physical representation of his sport, and in that sense Beckham is VERY representative of the current status of footbal.
But a legend?

Maradona singlehandedly winning the world cup was quite legendary. Would think that Cruyff is up there as well.
Eddy Merckx in cycling.

People who make their competitors shrink in fear everytime they show up, and that over a prolonged and full carrier. And then 20 yrs later you still tell your kids...
