Half Slip - Why?

I put this in another thread, where it probably didn't belong, because I thought the thread was here. If that makes any sense. Now, it is here; below.
Right, then. The Half Slip; fetish accessory or practical item of clothing? To show or not to show, and other related, 'what purpose does it have' questions.
They annoy me because they seem to have absolutely no value outside of an affectation to be garner attention (which, it could be argued reasonably, is the reason for almost all clothing), but some people have argued that they have real, practical, useful reasons for existing... and failed utterly to give even one that rang true. The slip, I understand. Shiftdresses and long cottony, semi-porous shirts under things, boxers panties socks codpieces and many an underthingy, I undertand... but not the half slip. Things that keep things in place, obscure transparancy and keep things from developing shape(s) in the clothes, fill space so you don't get, say, blisters on your heels from your sneakers shifting against bare feet. But what does this singular article do? Other than show at the edge of a skirt when you walk, sit, pose, whatever...?

half slip is to keep your skirt from riding up round your thighs, especially when wearing tights!! And is better option than full slip IMHO due to inherent sweatyness of full-slips, which tend to be made from synthetic material and act like some awful bodyhugging-anti-skin-breathing membrane. With half slip your torso is free to breath while skirt is still in place......have to agree though that they are not particularly attractive undergarment.......

Well, I have a long torso & I'm flat-chested. So it's really impossible to find a full slip that fits me. Also I don't wear underwear usually; so if I'm wearing a skirt, I want a little more coverage and, as noted, the half-slip helps the skirt hang properly.

It also doesn't make sense to me to wear a bra and then a full slip over the bra, if that's what people do. The trouble with the ordinary full slip is that one has different requirements on top than for the bottom. That said, I am always sort of eyeing my camisoles and half-slips together & trying to think of how I could connect them.

Thanks for the comments, as they do weigh in area(s) I probably wouldn't consider and to come in line with things that've been put to me as answers before, that I was not then inclined to take wholly.
I guess I'm just not as big a fan of short or (relatively) tight clothes, to the point where I don't really have to worry much about a skirt riding up or whatever. Truth: I'm a bit of a clothing prude: I'm forever chiding friends for putting what amount to a scarf around their hips (and then, four seconds later complaining about the chill, the breeze, or 'and did you see so and so checking my ass...'), and long-ish things what drape almost shapelessly or in forced shape, make being a lazy dresser that much simpler. The half-slip (and to be fair, in the large, the full) seem to be fixing something that doesn't have to be a problem in the first, but that's just me insisting everyone dress and do as I would, which would, frankly, be horrid. Ninety-percent of the time I tuck in a shirt, it ends up moving off to a side-angle, but I don't feel the need to put a straighten-the-buttons-and-frame-the-collar deal there.
Bras, underwear, thigh-high socks and the necktie all seem to have reasonable, problem-solving structural usage which can't be taken care of at an earlier or simpler point, whereas the halfslip is like the catalytic converter of clothing. Too thin: thicker material. Too short: longer material. Too whiny about things that really don't matter and nobody else gives to tugs over: me.

The necktie? Really?

Because if engines were designed better, there would be no need for catalytic converters? But if I were going to redesign underwear, it'd probably come out looking pretty much like a half-slip. I wear longish loose skirts, by the way. Shorter, tighter skirts should just be lined.

Half slips are for little girls to put on their heads when they are pretending to be a princess, a bride, or the Virgin Mary.
