EVP recordings?

Just curious, based on a TV show I lazily caught tonight. Wondering if anyone here knows anything about EVP, the term that describes capturing the sounds of the dead on tape? Can anyone here point me to some resources of worth on the process/history? I found a Strange Nation article on it here and a bit of a write-up here.

It's the sort of thing that I'd value some barbe-experience on. I'd run across it in terms of people claiming to have recorded dead soldiers from the American Civil War, but hadn't heard it explored as the "next phase" of mediumship. Anyone got any info?

Grant; I figured that you might've come across this kinda thing in yer work capacity?

I've done it for goetic summonings. It is really strange and some of the demons can do cool stuff with their voices.

Not really sure if it is worth it though.

I have, but I can't recall where exactly (aside from one-off emails).
http://www.worldofthestrange.com/main.htm
and http://www.parascope.com

would be good starting points.

I'd deliver more, but on a story now.

answering machines are a tabloid ghost staple as well. can't speak for veracity, but as far as stories go, there are some good uns.

I tried it once, with a friend of mine. We set up a little seance and tried calling up some dead personalities and ask questions while a machine was recording everything. Didn't work, nothing but our own voices on the tape.

well, my friend died in 1999.

Last summer, I found the unmarked tape in a box with a bunch of other tapes. I played it to see what was on it and was very spooked to hear my friend's voice unexpectedly, especially saying things like "Is there anybody out there?...". Weird. I mean, the tape was meant to capture the voices of the dead and , in a way, it did.

What, like the guy in the Police Academy films?

Electronic Voice Phenomena.

Here, some audio files: http://www.ghostfiles.org/evpfiles.htm

Weird, poorly laid-out site on "transcommunication," including video clips.

A much nicer overview, definitions of terms, how-to guide, with a link to files.

They used to have lots about it on Sightings on the sci-fi channel, is that still on? and did you see the program on BBC 1 Ghosts Werewolfs and um Zombies (think thats what it was called) they had a nice sample...

I've wanted to try this for ages. Does the recording medium matter?

I tried it when I was about 14 or something. Didn't work. Kinda disapointing really.

Johnny Haiku: For how long did you try to get the EVP? I mean, it doesn't happen everytime you turn on a tape-recorder. Most EVP researchers go into places that are reputed to be haunted.

Btw, there's an interesting article about EVP in a recent Fortean times issue. It's either the september 11th themed issue or the sonic weapons issue.

Not wanting to play Scully or anything but... I have heard some cheap tapes that actually have stuff already recording on them when they were taken out of the cellophane wrapping. Not loud, or anything, more like in the backgroud- but enough maybe to confuse matters.

Also, it's possible for some recording equiptment to pick up extraneous signals- radio signals, for example, or signal leakage from other nearby sources. Just a thought.
