Werewolf Novels

I'm in the mood for a good werewolf novel.

Problem is, there are a lot of bad, cheesy werewolf novels (though not nearly so many as vampire novels, oh save me Lord), and I'd rather not waste my time on a crap one when one of you lovely people might be able to recommend something better (or at least warn me away from the dregs).

I'm hoping for a novel that takes an intelligent or fresh look at the mythology of the moon-beast, preferably with some depth of character beyond "ze's a reluctant monster, tormented by hir Changes." Possibly a novel that's not a "Werewolf Novel" (in that The Genre Is the Plot sense) but just a good novel which features a prominent werewolf character (you see the distinction?). Is there such a thing as lycanthropic lit-fic? Or pulp - pulp is good, too. Interesting pulp. Am I asking too much, or will Barbelith come through for me again?

Oh, and a specific question: I remember hearing once about a WWII paratrooper/werewolf novel which was supposed to be interesting. Anyone know what it's called and if it's actually any good?

Thanks, Barbelith!

Peter David's "Howling Mad" is probably the freshest take on the myth yet- he has a wolf bitten by a werewolf, and every full moon, he turns into a very confused naked man.

I believe the WWII paratropper werewolf novel is called the Wolf's Hour by Robert R McCammon. I would drecommend it but the best werewolf novel and I mean novel(you could prop a door open with it) is MoonDance by S.P.Somtow. It got everything from multiple personality disorders to wild west shows, trains, serial killers, Native American Indians, loup garous and more.

Thanks!

I think I'll check out all three.

Kim Newman did a decent werewolf short story mixing together Zorro and werewolves which is better than it sounds. It's worth checking out.

DON'T READ BITTEN by Kelley Armstrong, it's exactly what you don't want.

Weirdly though the RPG Werewolf; the Apocalypse is a great read, recommended. Werewolves as ecoterrorists, funky.
