I'm in the mood for a good werewolf novel.
Problem is, there are a lot of bad, cheesy werewolf novels (though not nearly so many as vampire novels, oh save me Lord), and I'd rather not waste my time on a crap one when one of you lovely people might be able to recommend something better (or at least warn me away from the dregs).
I'm hoping for a novel that takes an intelligent or fresh look at the mythology of the moon-beast, preferably with some depth of character beyond "ze's a reluctant monster, tormented by hir Changes." Possibly a novel that's not a "Werewolf Novel" (in that The Genre Is the Plot sense) but just a good novel which features a prominent werewolf character (you see the distinction?). Is there such a thing as lycanthropic lit-fic? Or pulp - pulp is good, too. Interesting pulp. Am I asking too much, or will Barbelith come through for me again?
Oh, and a specific question: I remember hearing once about a WWII paratrooper/werewolf novel which was supposed to be interesting. Anyone know what it's called and if it's actually any good?
Thanks, Barbelith! |
