God Jr.

Recently Grove Press released the new Dennis Cooper novel. It's called "God Jr.", and it's in some ways a departure from his usual work. It's existence is owed to the fact that, among other thing, he wanted to write a book that his 13 year old cousin could read... Thus this is the first PG-13 Dennis Cooper novel. There's very little violence, no sex scenes at all, not even any gay characters.

It's pretty short at 163 pages, with big print. I read the whole thing in a few hours. It's really quite interesting. A lot of it revolves around video games and this one man's obsession with a game his dead son used to always play. Cooper tackles a lot of philosophical issues here, more so then usual. What is god? What is reality and the point of existence? The meaning of death? And so forth and so forth. Just these questions are being pondered by pixelated Gamecube denizens and talking snowmen. I'm curious as to what video game inspired these scenes... The main character manipulates a bear icon so perhaps Banjo Kazooie? There's some really great imagery though... That's what I've always liked about Cooper's work... You get page after page of minimalist description and dialogue and then he just hits you with a brilliant line of dialogue or a dazzling image.

He's got a new website now that's very in-depth, and from there you can access his blog, which is fascinating reading: Right now he's in France, with his Russian boyfriend who has been having Visa problems and difficulties geting into America. They visited De Sade's castle recently. And took pictures of the Divine Marquis' crib. Check it out, and ask him a question while you're at it... He responds to almost anyone who comments, though I've only asked him one question thus far.

Yayy! Thanks for the heads-up - I'll see if I can track it down, then post to this thread when, you know, I've actually read it.

Ooh. Maybe I should do a review of what I think it will probably be like before I read it, and then compare it to what it actually was like.

I read his "Closer" book it was quite um revealing in a transgressive gay sort of way. Modern de Sadeian cultural impulses.
He's better than Brett Easton Ellis (how many people got past the snuff scene in "American Psycho" whilst reading the book) as he is like a mirror of the old yuppie trendset that happened after the Eighties.
I always wanted to read "Horror Hospital" I saw the Robin Askwith indie film by the old friend of William S Burroughs, now that's a peach I'd say. Cooper to me reflects a trangressive part of culture that I suppose Harmony Korihme and Richard Linklater have attempted to catch. It's like Gus Van Sant's "My Private Idaho" with its portayals of Rent Boys and Hustlers - gives Edmund White and Genet a kick up the rears if ever I saw one. Have you ever read Jesus Ignacaia Adelpuerta he is one of the most sickest dudes around, I nearly puked, burnt the book in true Fahrenheit 451 fashion, sick to the very core.
I'd check out supervert.com if you are into gross out stuff like Baitailles and Xenophilliac Fetishes. I'll keep an eye out for it you should read Iian Sinclair or Will Self for post WSB and Stewart Home fictions. Dennis Cooper he's like the Gay Scene's GG ALLIN (TRULY A GOD BY NOW!) you know the singer in the infamous scum punk rock groups of the East Coast Americas, his Transgressive film a pleasure to watch in Brighton whilst inebriated.

Macrophage, there's a thread on Dennis Cooper's work in general here, and a couple of threads on subversive and/or transgressive fiction here and here, into which your above post might fit a little better: this thread is discussing God Jr, which precisely isn't (from what Sypha says) dealing with sex or violence.

Dennis Cooper is nothing like GG Allen. Cooper is a writer and an artist, GG was a freakshow.

gross out stuff like Baitailles

As a firm believer in the old adage 'a smile costs nothing, and brightens everyone's day,' I'm wondering if the same thing isn't true about checking your spelling before you put something on the interweb? It only takes a minute or two, and it stops possibly hundreds of people around the world from wanting to prise their own eyes out with spoons, you know.

Still, no use crying over spilt milk, I always say.

Which of Bataille's books have you read, Mr Macrophage ?

(It is all right to say if you haven't read any of them. No one will think the worse of you.)

I've tried reading "The Story of The Eye" once, I would need to get into a desired state to read the darn thing. It's on pdf format, I have never ever frequented a bookshop that I noticed his stuff.

It's "The Tear of Eros" I have always wanted. My days of reading twisted fiction are dwindling, becoming a middle aged Hippie by now.

I gave up on alot of the books that are sick, I'm getting more sensitive these days.

Only read one Dennis Cooper book and seen him on TV.

As to Sypha um yeh GG ALLIN doesn't really fit the bracket with Cooper, GG was more of a Performer as opposed to a Creative, and a very fucked up one at that.
