The Days of the Week

hey temple, help me have a little fun at work.

i create motion graphics for television and am currently making some packaging material used to promote a channel's weekly line up. this involves creating different verions of the same animation for each day of the week. this system will involve each day getting it's own colour. i thought it would be fun to inject a little hidden meaning in my colour choices so i did a little research on the deities behind the names of the week and their corresponding colours.

i offer this topic as a little bit of disposable fun, and would love any feedback or corrections on my colour choices.

MONDAY - the moon and various lunar deities - silver

TUESDAY - tyr and other warlike gods such as mars - blue

WEDNESDAY - odin and mercury/hermes - green

THURSDAY - thor, jupiter*

FRIDAY - freya, venus - red

SATURDAY - saturn / cronos - yellow

SUNDAY - mithras - purple **

* this one confused me. i wasn't sure if thor connected back to warlike gods such as tyr and mars or if the latin, jovian connection brought me to zeus / odin / allfather types. help!

** this might be a cheat, but mithras was associated with the sun . . . and i really wanted to use purple.

now if only there was an ancient diety i could connect to "Coming Up Next".

Werl, Tyr's a sky-god, so the blue makes sense... but I've also seen him associated with red. I'd have to look into it a bit more.

Odin = red ? Nuh-uh. Blue/grey; sometimes brown. I guess red would do for Mars. I've seen Odin associated with Mars once or twice--the war aspect, doncherknow--but he's associated rather more frequently with Hermes'n'Mercury. Tricky fellows all. Trying to map the Northern pantheon onto the Roman is always going to be a bit hit and miss. Try not to think in terms of congruent shapes, but in terms of Venn diagrams.

Now Thor is definately associated with red. Ignore Marvel's Fabio-a-like blond: Red hair, red beard, associations with fire and the forge.

Freya-Aphrodite connection, okay, fair enough. The lurve thing. I can dig it. Freya = red--nuh uh. Gold and green, those are her colours.

I'll crack open L.777 and get back to you.

Odin is definitely blue! It should be blue for Wednesday and red for Thursday.

If it was me, I'd put green on Tuesday and purple on Friday - for some reason those are the colors I associate with Tyr and Freya, respectively. (That's personal, though, and it'd probably work just as well in reverse.)

I'd use black or indigo for Saturday (all saturnine and underworldy-like) and yellow for Sunday, because, hello? It's SUNday.

Hmm... Crowley associates Thor with Ares (Mars... I mean, sorta... ah, you know what I mean). He also associates Odin with Athena, which is interesting, as well as with Uranus and Hermes. Also also, he presents a seperate set of associations for Wotan and Odin, although they're sort-of the same god (for a certain value of "same"). Wotan gets lumped in with Zeus, also with Iacchus (don't know why Iacchus. Isn't that essentially saying "Well, I don't have a clue but I needed another god name to make the table look a bit more interesting"?) Dunno what colour Zeus likes. We don't hang out.

Their are the geometric shapes assigned to the common notion of the seven energy centres and their colours, they could probably very easily be given transparency in any colour image.

Or objects associated with the norse pantheon and perhaps there totemic animals, are you looking at stills or animation?

Days of the week

Perhaps rune characters related to the respective gods and colours?, immersed in the image as geometric patterns?

It appears both egypt and china had a ten day week at certain points in there history.

Thor with Mars? Nah, Tyr with Mars blatantly. And surely Sunday would be Gold to the Moon's Silver? You could use Purple for the 'Coming up next' button instead, or Tyr for his ex-royalty background ('I used ta be chief of the Gods you know').

I think Green for Freyrday, Red for Thorsday, Blue for Wodinsday, maybe Grey or Purple for Tyrsday, Silver for Moonday, Gold (or yellow) for Sunday and Orange for Saturnsday ('cos Saturn the planet is kind of orangey)

Poor Tyr. Not only does he lose a hand to Fenrir, but he's knocked off the top god spot by a one-eyed travelling shaman.

you know the best part of working in broadcast?
being here in the studio at midnight on a sunday.

actually, the best part is stuff like this, adding a bit fun and meaning into something otherwise lame.

thanks a lot for all the input guys, you're awesome!

more when i'm a bit more sane.
