A bloody and unreported situation in the Maldives

I post this here because the avenues on Indymedia are currently down, and the more it is known the better. The main medias are not at the moment covering it at all - the fate of a small country.

It looks like there are large protests going on against the dictatorship in the Maldives (a set of islands to the southwest of India, 350,000 pop.) The government, led by Abdul Gayoom since 1978 (yeah, a dictator in other words), appears to have reacted to the protests with violence. A possible catalyst for the events seem to have been the arrest and torture of various activists, including opposition leaders, on friday. There has been ongoing violence; there are tanks in the streets, and a curfew has been laid down, but people are still gathering to protest (to my knowledge, peacefully) in defiance. Tear gas and pepper spray are reportedly being used, and rubber bullets appear to be being prepared.

The government will not let foreign journalists in, and may turn off the internet in the near future.

I report based on the testimony of a friend who is in the midst of the situation (join me in wishing him luck), and the collection of information contained on this site: http://www.dhivehiobserver.com/ - BBC news and even indymedia are blank with regards to any information on this situation. I do not know of the overall condition of the Maldives, whether the struggle is truly just, etc; but it seems evident from the testimonies of the torture and arrest of the opposition that it is a struggle that needs international attention.

This certainly does sound important. If it's not in tomorrow's sunday papers, then that really is bad- but I'm going to hold out till then to see if the situation gets reported.

Sounds worrying similar to the fact that Rhwanda was over-shadowered by O J Simpson in the news. Suprised that it hasn't been reported though as I would have thought that some Brit holidayers would have been out there to pique some western interest at the very least.

I've been (as my job) reading the Sunday papers so far... and haven't seen this as yet. Doesn't necessarily mean it's not been reported (there're three of us reading them, so I could have just not got the relevant bits), but it's definitely not prominent. And a quick cover to cover scan of the Independent on Sunday shows nothing.

A few reports linked to on Google News.

Hmm, any vested interests in keeping this quiet in the West, as there was with East Timor and the Ogoni massacres in Nairobi?

I don't think it's truly on the same scale as the great crimes against humanity of the last few decades, like east timor and rwanda; I think this happens alot in certain parts of the world. Localised crimes against the select opposition - easy to cover up, and nobody really cares - and harsh suppression of protest without it turning into a massacre.

My friend in the Maldives asked me to phone the BBC; the newswires apparently know to an extent what's going on.. I guess it's just too small a place/not enough buzzwords..

I'd think it's definitely worth contacting the BBC...

Although this website notes that previous reports by the BBC have raised the ire of the Maldives government...

I heard similar nasty things about the place some months ago. Coincidentally, about the time BBC World News ran ads for the Maldives as a tourist destination.

Errr, bjacques, I don't see anything in the article you cite linking the BBC to the advertising you describe... or am I missing something?

I contacted the CBC (we're all in this commonwealth together) and pointed out the lack of coverage (and given the rest of the news, this strikes me as more relevant than the funeral of a WW2 war hero (where's the NEW in that piece???)

at any rate, thanks for bringing this to our attention. there is no "us" and "them," but it's nice to know which one of "us" is armed and violent.

Oh, the irony of Google ads on clicking that link...

Sorry about that. To be more clear, the top few paragraphs were the ones I was interested in. BBC World was where I saw those tourism ads, and I imagine they ran elsewhere too.

H&K cooked up the notorious 1990 story about Iraqi soldiers tumping babies out of incubators in a Kuwait City hospital. The story in this link credits CBC-TV's "Selling The War." About the time I read that, I also read about the Maldives being a H&K client, and then I noticed a slew of ads for the Maldives.

So H&K will be among those helping to keep the islands out of the news.
