New kadampa buddhism

Has anybody had any experience with this form of buddhism, its the only type of buddhism local to my immediate area and i am intrested in going along and shall once meetings are on again.

Id like to know what impressions other people have formed of this school, id also be intrested to hear what any other buddhists within the temple have to say about new kadampa buddhism.

They have been very successful in bringing Buddhism from the Tibetan lineage to the West, however have not been without controvesy. I used to attend a centre about ten years ago and found it ok. Teaching was pretty good. I dont know much about the controversy but you can google some of the words in this article

Geshe Kelsang's New Meditation Handbook is one of the most the most concise and readable introductions to buddhism ive read. However in my opinion the tradition has little to offer more advanced students, their interpration of tantric yoga is full of unnessecary metaphorical language. There is also a lot of emphasis on faith in ones spiritual guide and the buddhas & deities, which i was not particulary into being biased towards what gnosis and experiential sprituality can teach. Saying that they do have some very intriguing invocation ['self-generation'] rituals. If your just getting into eastern practices id definately recommend it.

the shuk - den issue is highly convoluted and complex involving reincarnations, modern politics, ancient politics, distinct tibetan institutions and the overall role of dharma protectors, its alot to digest, not sure what to make of it yet.
