Sifting through the various bits of Marvel hype at Newsarama (some potentially interesting, much not), I find this gem:

X-Statix: Dead Girl Special is by Peter Milligan, Mike Allred and Nick Dragotta is a 4 or 5 issue limited series returning to the world of X-Statix with the original creators. Alonso said the series will feature cameos galore of dead Marvel characters.

Can I get a "woot!"?

Yes you can.

Annoying as it is that Milligan ossilates from such heights of greatness to the bogs of standard, he is still well worth a punt. When he is good, he is untouchable.

Was X-Statix worth reading? Maybe its just me being continually turned off by the artwork, which is kind of neat but doesn't suggest the greatest of stories. Are the trades worth picking up?

Spaniel
11:30 / 09.08.05
Yes they are, especially the early ones.

As for the art, I remember similar discussions when the comic started out, and I have to ask, what kind of art does suggest a good story? Naturalistic art? The art of Jim Lee? The oh so beatiful work of Alex Ross? Gritty Millaresque stylings?

Read the comic, have a think, and then make a judgement, is my advice.

Well obviously Mike Allred, Duncan Fregredo, Darwyn Cooke and Paul Pope aren't as good as the guy who did the art for Liberality, but I think they have a fair go...

Haus of Mystery
13:02 / 09.08.05
I was thinking last night about how consistently excellent the art was for X-Statix. While Morrison got lumped with some shitty choices, Milligan's title was a thing of quiet pop-art joy. And while I'm there, where is Fegredo? He's one of the best.

who is Nick Dragotta?

rumor is that Allred will pencil and Dragotta will ink...

who is Nick Dragotta?

Ahh. The eternal question.

Allred's art's always lovely to look at.
Hopefully, as sleaze says, this'll be "good Milligan". And good Milligan, as we all know, is very very good indeed.

I think he drew The Losers. 'Swhat came up in google, anyway.

Dragotta does a few fill-ins for the Losers, and he also inked an issue or two of X-Statix... and, I think, pencilled an issue, as well.

Anyway, I'm totally in for this series. More X-Statix!

Teensy weensy thing, but that image at the top of the thread looks totally ditko-handed. ie, Allred doesn’t draw hands like that, Ditko draws hands like that. Er, which is to say, nice to think that Milligan might be emitting Ditko vibes again. Because he’s good at that.

16:42 / 09.08.05
Apparently Allred didn't draw that image, this Nick guy did. That's what I read on Allred's message board, at least.

I thought the Dr. Strange looked rather like Mark Buckingham drew him.

Woot woot.

If only X-Statix was still going, instead of the very, very pedestrian X-Men Milligan is doing now.

Is this only going to feature Dead Girl, or will the rest of X-Statix make an appearance as well? They're dead, too, after all.

I brang up X-Statix in a comic chat on slsk and no one knew what I was talking about.

someone just made a joke that it sounded 'x-cellent'

...wankers.

::looks up from the first X-Statix TPB::

...this is by far one of the strangest non-Morrison trades I have ever read. I have a feeling it might make a modicum more sense if I'd read the X-Force stuff that came before it.

One image that will linger forever is Doop with the wood axe, covered in luminescent blue blood. Smiling at the camera. Dear god, the things such horrors suggest...

Yeah -some of the best x-statix stuff was in X-force ...

Allred just said in a newsarama interview that he is *only* inking this book.

I don't mind really - I'm not the world's biggest Allred fan. He's good and all, but once the initial novelty wears off, his work is sometimes perfunctory at best.

And here is that interview.

Linkies'd be good, Wolf-san. I'll pm you how to do if you dunno.

Now, looky at pics, realise MacGyver lies, and have new wallpaper.

Anyway, it'll look just like Allred, like that time he inked the Quitely cover for X-Statix.

The Falcon

See me vindicated, yet again, by preview pics.

Interview's alright too:

Manolis: How has Dead Girl evolved from her first appearance? What has changed about her personality and her relationships?

Mike: She has healthier teeth and gums.

Manolis: A slowly developing subplot in the X-Statix run was the relationship between the Anarchist and Dead Girl. It started off as a press-bubble, but it developed into a uniquely dysfunctional affair. What did you think the connection was between these two characters?

Mike: They simply had that natural "vibe" for each other. Chemistry. They just clicked.

Manolis: Will Tike Alicar be playing an important role in this series?

Mike: Yupperooney!

Manolis: How did she originally come to be?

Mike: She died.

Manolis: How did Pete first describe her to you?

Mike: He said to draw a girl who is dead.

Milligan is a brillant character designer, inny, he really is.

Bard, you should definately read X-Force before you read X-Statix. They're the same story, with X-Force continuing into X-Statix with no breaks in between. It's the first half of the story.

This came out today. It was good.

Why do I get the feeling The Pitiful One is one of those Hostess Snack Cakes comics villains?

Adore that last page.

Boy, I used to love X-Static. The death toll!!! The ludicrous dialogue!!! The subliminar soda-pop ads (don't tell you didn't notice'em)!!! I hope they bring back Zeitgeist...

oh dude?!?! this came out today . . .

I was just in FP and picked up the holy triumvirate of

hellblazer (set in glasgow for next 7 issues)
ASS 2
Planetary 24

If only I'd known this was in.

I'm sure you all want to know that I'll be popping in to FP once again, on the way home. (alternatively I could dive over to the more local Future Shock and score this but the bhoy Duncan'll tell you all about the geezer who runs that shop and how fuckin horrible he is. So I'll stick with FP.)

A good week for comics, eh?
