I mentioned this in a policy thread ages ago, and I seem to remember I wasn't the only one. I think it's a shame to have FOUR forums in grey, especially when there's been such a nice range of shades introduced with the new forums recently.

What do people think?

Easy answer: Grey is easy to read. I know it's a bit boring, but all the other easyread colours have been taken up.

Generally the reason Barbelith isn't overly flashy is because it was designed to be based around reading the posts rather than fannying about with overwrought designs.

If you want the hard answer I'm afraid you'll have to wait until one of the people who know about the 'lith's design scheme shows up. I beleive there's a reason for the greyness.

I like the grey forums. They stand out less which is useful when browsing at work and trying to avoid being fired, and as Legba says, they're easy to read.

So I guess that's that then. Fair enough.

So basically the colour schemes work like they do to group things together and to show people where the emphasis of the site is. The core of the site are the fora from Head Shop through to Radio and Music where we actually talk on topic about things in the world. THey're broken up into two sections (although not terribly well visually) Head Shop - Temple (previously called 'the revolution' as a clump) and Arts, Fashion & Design -> Radio and Music (previously called 'the spectacle as a clump).

The bits at the top and bottom of the site are there to support the activity of those main bits and as such are grouped together with a different colour scheme. It's probably not enormously obvious, but there is a rationale to breaking up the colour schemes as we have - and it's to do with showing differences between types of fora.

How would you say this applies to the Creation forum?

you might create something, say jenny everywhere, that would become worthy of inclusion in one of the other fora, in that case the comic books forum.
hinterland has a books thread too.

The Creation supports the other fora - along with the Conversation, Policy and Gathering, in that it creates a space for the community to up the social aspects of the site by giving people a place to work and chat and play with one another. It doesn't make what goes on in that forum less important than the other fora, it just operates at the meta-level of user-to-user socially-focused collaboration and play rather than at the more formal discussion level.
