Barbelith Book Swap Central Clearing House

Often, as I do my irregular trawl of the local charity shops and jumble sales, I see cheap copies of books that either (a) I love but already own or (b) I'm not interested in myself, but just know that a particular friend would want, but am not sure whether they already own it and/or would want to reimburse me for however much it costs, if it costs a substantial amount. This makes my eyes water and my shopping fingers twitch - I hate to pass up a bargain.

So it occurred to me that I would really like to see a site in which people could list their top few second-hand desires - and then, if I ever happened to see those books for cheap (like, cheap) as I went about the place, I could buy them and mail them to the people who wanted them. Or if it was a poster I knew and trusted, and I knew I was going to a book fair where their book was likely to be, I might ask them (via PM) whether they'd be willing to reimburse me for their listed book if I saw it for sale for (up to) a particular amount.

It also occurred to me, reading this thread, that the Books forum of Barbelith is full of posters with time on their hands, an eye for a bargain, and an interest in disseminating particular Barbe-toned material to discerning customers.

Hence, I have started this Book Swap thread for people to list books that they're especially desirous of getting their hands on. Now, Barbelith, it seems to me, has a pretty good record when it comes to the offline exchange of goods and services between its members (see the Free Books thread). But I think we should have some fairly strict ground rules for this thread, because if it turned into an auctioning-second-hand-books place, that could become nasty, and that's not what I had in mind.

(1) This thread is ONLY for listing books that you want - and for discussion between posters about the merits of those books. Posters should think of it mostly as a kind of "my dream book" thread: any actual book-receiving that occurs should be seen as a bonus.

(2) This is NOT a marketplace thread. Any posts offering to buy and/or sell books will be deleted. Any arrangements that involve money changing hands - eg paying for postage and/or paying for books - should be made by PM and/or email between the posters involved. Neither Barbelith nor the starter of this thread (ie me) will have any responsibility for such private arrangements.

If any of the mods or any legal-minded people can think of anything to add, please do so. If there are serious problems with this premise that I haven't thought of, let me know and we can lock/delete this thread. Otherwise, let's away!

I'm looking for:

Over the Hills to Fabylon [sic] by Nicholas Stuart Gray. Though, of course, if you find this for 20p somewhere you might rather sell it, seeing as how second-hand copies seem to be going for like £100. I just thought I'd ask.

Stalky & Co, by Rudyard Kipling.

Wow, what a lovely idea for a thread.

I'd be interested in getting a copy of David Yallop's In God's Name. You can get it at Amazon for about £30, but if anyone sees a copy for a lot cheaper, then let me know.

Also- if we can use this thread for offering, right me if I'm wrong- I'm working on a short illustrated booklet of poetry. If anyone would like a copy, PM me and I'll see what I can do.

I'm always looking to complete my Kim Newman collection. A copy of 'The Original Dr. Shade and other stories' would be brought into my home and cuddled like a tiny child of paper and ink.

Things I always want to find when I go into second hand bookshops: etiquette books, preferably aimed at women, from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s. It's highly unlikely that any of these will be cheap, ever, but I can dream... Also, memoirs from America at around the time of prohibition. Even the really self-indulgent ones (as if there are any other kinds).

Urban Prey or The Crucifixion Squad by Peter Beere. Both in the Trauma 2020 series - or the sequel. Ridiculous nightmare tales of a grimy dysptopian Britain. Read the second one when I was about 10 and thought it was magnificent. Been waiting for the resolution of the cliff hanger ending I was left on for 20 years now. As I recall, the hero was crawling through sewers, being hunted by a bald homcidal albino and then there's an incident with a vicous dwarf in dungarees and a crossbow...

Fack me, that sounds rather exciting.

As stated before, "Lord Horror" by David Britton. Published by Savoy. I'll certainly go for it if you find it cheap because it's a bit of a collectors item, but if anyone comes across one I'd like to know.

I would very much likes copies of these two books by T. H. White:

The Godstone and the Blackymor (I hope very much this is not a racist book, I believe it is about White's stay in Ireland)

Scandalmongers

These are both very scarce so if anyone chances to happen on them, however bedraggled, I would appreciate a heads-up.

I've been looking for part one of Michael Scott's Culai Heritage-Magician's Law since I read them first at about 11. Sadly they're out of print now and I don't own a credit card so Amazon is not an option.
Anyone?

I am looking for a copy of Iain M. Banks' The Player of Games, my favorite book. My copy is falling apart at the spine, and the pages are swelled with salty sea air from repeated readings at the beach.

I do believe it's currently out of print.

well, i've never read fem-hippy fave 'the mists of avalon' and as part of my arthurian kick I'm interested in how this latterday hit ran with things.

the only copies i can find are full price in borders and that, when this book as you can tell from the cover

is clearly a seventyfivepee-er if ever there was one.

so, anyone got an oldie they don't want? i will swapsy you a copy of maul by tricia sullivan

another modern fantasy-by-a-lady classic that's rather better than the cover suggests.
