I've transfered some avi files from my computer to my parents, to take advantage of the DVD burner on their computer. However, none of the burnin' programs on my parent's computer want to play ball because they need a codec to deal with the files, if I run MediaPlayer ot does seem to go and look but then there's some sort of error and it can't download anything.

Has anyone got any ideas for how I can get around this? Seeing as I've got no way of knowing what codec this computer needs? Is whatever WMP connects to just as naturally unreliable as any Microsoft thing and therefore if I try again in a few hours it might then connect to wherever it needs to connect to and download the codec?

Needless to say, there's a Magnum five senses lolly in it for whoever can help me out so I can burn these files before the weekend is up...

Might be as simple as changing player, you could try BSPlayer which is popular BSPlayer

If that doesn't work you could use GSpot which will tell you which codecs you need and then it should be as simple as googling it/them and downloading them.

GSpot

Thanks, that seems to have done the trick. Haven't managed to burn the files as movies onto the DVD but that's the crap software on my Dad's computer rather than anything else.
