A Campaign for Intelligent Design

[Note to moderators: I am not sure if this thread ought to go here or in Temple, but I am putting it here because I think it is more on a political subject]

Recently, when queried about teaching "intelligent design" in public schools, President Bush remarked, "I think that part of education is to expose people to different schools of thought... You're asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas, the answer is yes."

The whole crusade for teaching the concepts in Genesis under the thin veil of "Creation Science" or "Intelligent Design" has been big of late, and I think it is time to have some fun with it. American 'Lithers can help out by writing letters to editors/congressmen/schoolboards demanding that the "Creation Science" of obscure or even made-up religions be taught in our public schools.

I, personally, am gonna work with Zorastrianism. The word of Ahura Mazda as revealed by his prophet Zarathustra must be presented to our children in order to expand their viewpoints.

Who wants to do other stuff? Astaru creation? Maybe Sumerian? If there are any good ones that you guys think of, write letters and post them here. I am working on mine now, and will post it when I am done.

I am writing you with much concern after having read of your hearing to decide whether the alternative theory of Intelligent Design should be taught along with the theory of Evolution. I think we can all agree that it is important for students to hear multiple viewpoints so they can choose for themselves the theory that makes the most sense to them. I am concerned, however, that students will only hear one theory of Intelligent Design.

Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him.

It is for this reason that I’m writing you today, to formally request that this alternative theory be taught in your schools, along with the other two theories. In fact, I will go so far as to say, if you do not agree to do this, we will be forced to proceed with legal action. I’m sure you see where we are coming from. If the Intelligent Design theory is not based on faith, but instead another scientific theory, as is claimed, then you must also allow our theory to be taught, as it is also based on science, not on faith...

There's also some useful data on pirates...

% i don't think you should make fun of this at all. look, it's pretty obvious that intelligent design is behind all of... well, this.

the most favored theory at the time of this writing in our circle of 'viennese frontlinethinkers for intelligent design and lecture establishment' (short viffidle) is that matter was created by an omnipotent being that is historically referred to as many names, the oldest of this names probably being >g'mshen m'shen< (roughly translated from sanskrit texts that were found in a burnt and shambled state and are related to nothing that we know of), which is most assuredly the forefather to modern entity >gumption mission man<. he/she/it created matter out of his/her/its bleeding gums and shat life into the whole mess.

many traditional sayings point to the validity of this theory, such as 'by my gums!' or 'oh, shit!' and many more (we at viffidle are sure that you have experienced many similar sayings and connections to the almighty gumption mission man).

also, most evidently, the gumption mission man wants us to diddle all sisters, which (as we all know) is an engraved, genetic drive in all of us, which again proves the existence of gumption mission man and his/her/its creation of our existence.

note: although this entity is referred to as the >gumption mission man< nothings is known about its gender. viffidle assumes that this entity has gone through many cultural gender changes and is in fact without any sex, which explains why its creation (us) is so driven to have sex. %

It does bring up the interesting question of who should decide what goes into the textbooks and what a school should be allowed to teach.

I think it brings up just how utterly ill-informed Americans are on what a scientific theory is.

Most of the people I have talked to who are pushing Intelligent Design as a "theory" disbelieve science and feel it is all evil anyway, so when I try to explain the difference between what is commonly thought of as a theory and what a scientist means by a theory, they counter that I am arguing semantics because I don't want to give their religion credence.

The sad part of it is that when ID is finally removed from schools, the same people will try it again with another way to get "An invisible man in the sky made everything" thought of as science. And, I believe that they will eventually win, because it's just so tiring to fight the same battle over and over...causing two tiers of people when it comes to scientific knowledge: The haves and the have nots. And currently, the have-nots are running everything.

I hope they teach intelligent design in software engineering courses. But I think that would take an act of God.

from The Onion this week:

Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity With New 'Intelligent Falling' Theory

KANSAS CITY, KS — As the debate over the teaching of evolution in public schools continues, a new controversy over the science curriculum arose Monday in this embattled Midwestern state. Scientists from the Evangelical Center For Faith-Based Reasoning are now asserting that the long-held "theory of gravity" is flawed, and they have responded to it with a new theory of Intelligent Falling.

I hear there's a big trial with the ACLU this month that some are referring to as 'Scopes 2'... (in all seriousness)

Oh, yay! I am desperately in love with this Flying Spaghetti Monster. It's what I meant by the original post, only twenty times better. Now, Boing Boing is offering a Million-dollar reward for proof that Jesus is not the son of the Giant Flying Spaghetti Monster. It's wonderful.

Even better (Stoatie take note!) is the FSMers dress up as pirates in order to stop global warming. FSM-affiliated scientists found that global warming has increased as the number of pirates has decreased. Taking a leaf from the White House's favorite scientists, they've equated correlation with causality and, therefore, have made it their mission to increase the number of pirates.

On Saturday, I saw a pirate posse here in Amsterdam, so I know the faith is strong here.

Arrr...only 28 days til International Talk Like A Pirate Day!

RAmen!
