Broadening the Books Forum

This idea was conceived (cough) in Whiskey's thread about a sex and relationship forum so I thought we should give it its own thread to reduce rottiness.

Smoothly made this remark:

Sleaze, in a F,TV&T thread mentioned that he wanted to talk about Private Eye, but that he didn't know where to start a thread about it. Arguably, there's a stronger case for a Newspapers & Magazines forum.

Then I added:

That newspaper and magazine idea is a good'un Smoothly. I often think I'd like to start a thread on an interesting news item that's not fit for Switchboard but at the same time I don't want to start stacks of threads in convo for individual little news items.

I had considered a long-running thread in convo for "Daily Interesting News Items" or summat, but in general I'm not a fan of big catch-all threads.

Sleazenation:

Alternatively the Books forum could have its remit extended to include print media. I realize that the addition of radio to the remit of the music forum has hardly been a resounding success, but with moderators leading the discussion a fair few interesting threads could ensue...

Mordant:

That's not a bad idea. Change "Books and Literature" to "The Printshop" or somesuch, and we can all bang on about magazines and papers too (says the person who hardly ever posts in Books).

Fridge:

Maybe Books and Literature should be really more Writing, whether it's in a book, a paper, on a web page? I can't think of a snappy title for that.

It wouldn't be the place to discuss news items (unless they're about books/papers/writing of course) - the subject of the news items should determine where that happened, not the fact that they were in a newspaper.

Sleaze again:

OK on the extended books tip how about: "Books, print and publishing" as a handy catch all for printed and published material?

What does everyone else think?

I think it'd need to be slightly more precise than that - if it looks like it's supposed to cover all print media, what's the point in having a seperate forum for comics?

Why not just have an exception to the rule?

Well, for historical reasons we have traditionally kept comics and books separate, while there are a range of reasons for putting them together (and keeping them apart), simplicity would seem to err on keeping them and their back catalogue of discussions discrete.

I tend to agree. Technically comics should be part of a broader print medium but fuck it, we need something so that in fifty years time and new kids come in and ask why we aren't fucking shit up we can cough up a spleen and pretend to be senile and explain that yes, we started as a comics orientated forum so that's why it's seperate. I've decided to start going senile now to save time and catch a leap[ on the rest of you young otters.

Sensible answer: I don't see any harm in keeping a seperate comic forum at the moment.

I'm not suggesting that Comics should be reintegrated into Books, I'm just talking in terms of the proposed changes to the name of the forum - things like Books, Print & Publishing would seem to encompass comics.

Maybe Books & Magazines? Books & Journals?

Books and Periodicals? Would cover magazines, journals, and newspapers— but I suppose certain comic formats would seem to fit here too...

Hasn't Switchboard become a de facto newspaper/news magazine forum?

I don't think Switchboard covers lifestyle type magazines, though, does it? Or, for example, political commentary magazines like NI, or other stuff we might get and want to talk about, like the Big Issue.

How would we work this w/regards to talking about music, game and film magazines? Because there's an argument to say that a thread about NME belongs in music, or Games Master magazine goes in Games and Gameplay.

coming back to the question that really kicked this thread off - where would a discussion on Private Eye go?

How's about TEXT?

Actually, no, I've just realised that these days the word "text" means not being able to spell properly.

I think we could easily extend the forum to include proper articles from newspapers and magazines, such as Sleaze's Private Eye example.

The title could be something broad like "Writing & Criticism", with a subtitle of "Literature, Essay & Opinion" or something along those lines. Or we could make it something vague like "Print Store" or "The Library" and just see how it goes.

To get back to my initial thoughts on this, often there are interesting opinion pieces in the paper that I'd like to discuss with the board, but it may not be weighty enough to start a headshop or switchboard thread. Or the piece itself might be fairly lightweight and amusing but pitching it into the convo would seem a kind of default option when really the aim is to discuss the piece itself rather than the issue at hand.

** side note: a few posts in these policy threads have raised the issue of whether we have a clear definition of the role of the conversation forum and how it relates to the others. Maybe clarifying that would help us to decide what to do with the other fora?

I quite like Writing & Criticism as a title, and see no problem with extending the remit of the forum if we do it carefully. Basically the question here always seems to me to be (1) what is the subject of the study (2) what other things do you use to examine it. So for example, examining gender roles by looking at comics is a Head Shop post. Examining gender roles IN comic books is a Comic Books post. Writing a thread reacting to Farenheit 9/11 is a Film, TV and Theatre thread, writing a thread about reactions to the Bush presidency and using Farenheit 9/11 as an example is a Switchboard thread.

As long as we get the title right to concentrate on the art/skill of writing and the artistic impact of things written, then I don't see any reason to restrict commentary to the specific format of a book. My only anxiety is that by putting in words like 'newspaper' you make it harder for people to determine whether it's abotu news or writing.

Literature, Criticism & Writing? It's a bit wordy/worthy, but it gets the emphasis in the right place.

Although I should warn you that changing the first letter will mean I have to reorganise the homepage to keep that chunk alphabetical and that would probably mean changing the colour-schemes around!

It would mean that comics would get the books colour-scheme (plum), film would get the comic books scheme (reddy plum), games would get the film scheme (red) and books would get the games colour scheme (orange). Radio and Music and Art, Fashion etc would be unaffected.

Or we could call it "Books, Criticism & Writing" which would keep all the other fora in the current position....

Yup works for me.

Ooh. Great idea. I was just wanting to start an ongoing women's weekly thread (it would be like the Big Brother thread, but with a rotating cast, as we deconstructed and generally bitched about the true-life stories in Chat) and wondering about whether it could fit into Books, so I'm all for extending the remit.

As for names, I really like The Printshop and The Library (to go with The Temple, The Headshop, etc).

I like The Library, but given the alphabetical complications, I'll vote for sleaze's suggestion...

Why does it have to be alphabetical?

sleazenation
17:10 / 07.08.05
Because, judging from Tom's post, that is the way the software of the board works. The Spectacle threads are grouped together in alphabetical order, changing the first letter of any of the forum titles in that group will alter the order in which they appear onscreen and thus their colour...

Spatula Clarke

The Library's cool, but it doesn't really fit in with the style of the other Spectacle fora names.
